can someone please explain WTF an active buffer is? Okay, let me give it a shot. I apologize in advance for making an ass of myself and confusing everyone. First understand the difference between passive and active. We're basically talking about energy here. The audio signal has some energy of its ...

Hooray! The Tape Op board is back! So long social life, hello internet (again). It's great to see some of the most of proactive members from the old place, "surrogate moderators" if you will, have now received the titles they deserve. A big thanks to soundugy for his generosity in accepting this new...

Available kits for DIY assembly

It's only been two days and already I see more than one thread asking where to find DIY kits, so I think we should create a sticky listing all of them in an effort to keep this place free of clutter. If you ask me a kit is something which supplies some or all of the parts for you, a finished PCB at ...

For most ribbons on most (not so incredibly loud) sources, I would say absolutely not.

Install high-quality transient voltage arrester/suppressors/filters at your main panels I would stress the "high quality" requirement, as cheap solutions like a simple transorb may just distort your incoming AC, creating partials (noise!) which a DC power supply may not get rid of. And I'm sure we'...

thus would avoid unnessesary stages (more components = more money) in thier designs. Is this "active buffer" also functioning as a D/A converter or a LPF? In the case of a converter however, there is no reason at all to be using an active buffer in the first place, a transformer will do the job jus...

Uh oh... don't really like where this is going with the IC arguements, but I had to step in and say I very much agree with Dave concerning the record/repro electronics having a huge effect. Why do you think different tape machines sound so different when you're using the same media at the same setti...

Re: Microlimiter mods?????

I love the thing but DAMN, it's got some noise! No IC op amp I can think of will ever be as noisy as you're hinting at unless the designer has done something seriously wrong or it's just plain broken. Noise in older gear is usually caused by malfunctioning power supplies + worn out filter capacitor...

Re: Picking a pre to build... Advice? (SCA)

The A12 and J99 models are going to cost more per channel because opamps sold separately. I would get the op amps that Seventh Circle recommends for their circuits otherwise you could oscilations and other such problems. Despite what many people think opamps are rarely plug-and-play like a 12A_7 tub...

Re: Best D.I.Y. Neve Kit (complete) ?

Over at the Lab, there are folks doing 1176 derivatives and also there are some replotted BA283/1272 boards available. I haven't thought about doing the Studio Electronics thing of combining them, but naturally it can be done. Bear The user Bauman sells BA283AM (output stage only) PCBs now for only...

Re: What can I use this for??

Have you tried using it as a summing mixer for mixing out of the box? I'm really sorry, but i'm not familiar with this process. What, if you can briefly explain it, does it mean? Justin It means sending a number of tracks or subgroups from your DAW out through individual D/A converters so that they...

Re: Recording thru my MS 16 HELP!!!

You are recording the tracks to the MS16 and then back into Pro Tools at the same time, correct? If so... Looking at the monitor select panel on the left, you see input, sync, repro Monitoring input or sync while the tape is recording (rolling, as you put it) will just pass the input signal of those...

Re: Justifying lots of money going into one thing.

Buying a cheaper half decent solution every time you become dissatisfied is probably more costly (in more ways than just price tag) than spending a lot of cash on a great solution that may keep you satisfied your whole career.

Re: Royer 121 / Ribbon ???'s

I agree with Nestle's comments aobut it being FANTASTIC on electric guitar cabinets and not the best choice for most anything else. I don't put it as close as I would a 57, between 4" to one foot from the grill maybe. Also, blending with another mic can yeild even greater results. I will mention tha...
