anyone know the major sound/quality/feature differences between the Soundtracs MRX and Topaz boards? i hear good things about both. i saw there is an MRX for sale in New York, and i might be able to go pick it up there while on tour in a few weeks. on the other hand, i know of a Topaz here in town t...

thanks for all the recommendations. i'm still not sure if i want/need to take the plunge yet, but i'll definitely keep an eye our for these boards.

i don't know, i had a mackie 8-bus for a while and i didn't really like how the preamps or the EQ sounded. i liked all the features. i mainly got rid of it because i was able to sell it for $800 and buy the tascam m520 for $300. so that worked out okay. i feel like my biggest concern with any consol...

Mixing Console Recommendations

i've been thinking about saving up and buying a new mixing console for the studio, and i need some advice to figure out whether i can actually get what i want for a reasonable price, and some recommendations for specific models to look for. right now i am using a Tascam m520. i do most of my recordi...

that makes sense. i was just curious why this sort of mic seemed so hard to come by. although i should point out i wasn't asking specifically about "nice" old LDCs, just any at all. and i'm not set on buying vintage mics, but i do prefer mics that smell musty, rather than mics that smell like a Guit...

Vintage LDCs?

so i've been thinking about buying a pair of LDC mics for the studio, and in looking around, it seems like there are not very many choices when it comes to reasonably priced older (pre-1980 or so) LDCs. looks like Neumann has this market cornered, and i'm definitely not trying to spend that much mon...

cool, i am glad it still sounds authentic and aggressive to you. of all the projects i've worked on, this is probably the cleanest, most heavily edited and tweaked recording i've done. my first instinct (when recording this sort of stuff) is to make things sound more raw and crazy than this, so i'm ...

Grounding issue while calibrating tape machine?

so i've been trying to align and calibrate my Revox B77 for the first time, and i'm running into some weird issues, the main one being this: when i touch the screwdriver to some of the adjustment pots, that contact makes the VU meter jump up or down a few db. it doesn't happen with all the pots, but...

thanks, i'll try messing with the snare EQ. glad the guitars probably aren't a serious problem. most importantly the band is happy with it so far, so that's good.

here is a clip of one of the tunes (quick rough mix). after re-amping the bass and screwing around with the guitars more, i think things are pretty under control, but i'd still be happy to hear any tips you guys have. thanks.

after working on it more, i think i got the guitars to a good place, although the nasty bass tone still isn't helping. both the guitars have a high pass filter starting around 150hz, a treble shelf cut of a few db starting at i think around 6 or 7k, a cut around 3k or so to remove some harsh buzz-sa...

cool, i will keep all this in mind. maybe i'll try to post a quick clip when i get home so you can hear what i'm working with. it's weird, sometimes i listen to it and think it sounds totally great, other times the guitars get annoying really fast. i know that the sound i currently have is not way o...

Me vs. A Wall of Marshall Stacks

i could use some mixing advice on this latest project i'm working on. I recorded a big loud punk band with two guitar players, both playing out of big loud marshall amps. i have the two main tracks done live, plus a third rhythm track that i may or may not use. the issue i'm having is that the guita...
