Re: Suppose you were triple-tracking a part.....same microph
dynomike, as long as it's different takes, you won't have phase problems. both the pitch and the timing would have to be *exactly* (in a physically impossible way) the same for this to occur. toothpaste, i agree that for the tight chorusing effect, 2 tracks is optimal. more than that and you start g...

Re: what distortion pedal do you use?
For a long time i assumed it was impossible. I wanted to be able to get the sound of my amp, with just "a bit more", in terms of presence, break-up, cranky-snarliness... For me, the Klon Centaur does it. It is a very "clean" distortion pedal (overdrive, really), in that it doesn't really have a soun...

Re: What mic is next on your list?
I'm torn. What i most need is a better vocal mic. Currently vocals generally get a AKG414b-uls, though i sometimes choose my EV757nd, a very smooth sounding handheld dynamic. The 414 is bright and cutting in the top, with a strong, tight low end. The EV is smooth and warm in the mids, but lacks top ...

Re: Help with big (for me) session setup. (Long)
As far as the RNCs go- I'm planning on getting there early Friday evening to set up drum, guitar and vocal mics. That gives me a good 2 or 3 hours to spend on dialing in a nice drum sound, which ought to be enough, right? Yes, but keep in mind that the bleed from the other instruments will also aff...

Re: Help with big (for me) session setup. (Long)
i'd stay away from the C1000 for vocals. i have found it useful as a room or overhead. if you want to track vocals live, give the vocalist (you?) headphones, maybe open-backed ones, and feed them with only vocals. they'll hear everything else just fine anyway, and this will save you from having to a...

depends how "cool" people think they are in your locale. they should be cheap, but there's a hip factor priced in sometimes...wing wrote:are the silvertones really cheap? like usually found for $50?

Re: Suppose you were triple-tracking a part.....same microph
if you want a tight, almost chorusy effect, then use the same mic setup, and try to sing it exactly the same. if you want more of a big mush effect, you may have to vary it a bit, and track many times.

Re: Cheap ass electric guitar thread
danelectro, yes. the newer ones are excellent and cheap. hohner also makes some very good and inexpensive copies of classics. i had an electric archtop for a while that was really solid. teiscos can be really good too, but they vary a lot, so make sure you get a good one. not a huge fan of silverton...

Re: Outboard mic pre chains
here's a related question.
say you have a pre that sounds real nice but doesn't have enough gain. do you use it anyway and then run it into a second mic pre or line amp for a few more dBs?

i score it a draw, myself. by which i mean, if you're inclined to agree with cheney, you will, and if you're inclined to agree with edwards, you will. they both got their messages across.
now ask me who has the stronger message and i have a different answer

Re: order of things thread....
well, you definitely want to avoid sending loud pops to your speakers. so put the amp on standby before plugging or unplugging a guitar cable, mute your monitor speakers before powering up or down other equipment, etc.

Re: Egg Carton padding vs. high end stuff
the main difference between fiberglass and foam is that the fiberglass absorbs better at lower frequencies. if you're just trying to kill a flutter problem in the mids or highs, foam will do fine. for general deadening, and especially for help with low end problems (which almost all of us not workin...

Re: More A/D conversions VS in the box compression
I find DP's dynamics plugin quite usable. But i still find it worth the trouble to send tracks out to my RNC. It gives the track more shape, and can do more drastic stuff than the dynamics plug. I use the plug all the time, but only when i basically like the way a track sounds and feels but need it ...

Re: recording accordion
i sorta doubt mic choice is your problem here. sounds like you don't like the sound of the bass side. maybe a different (farther?) placement, or maybe an adjustment to the player's technique is called for.
