Check, in the system profiler, who makes your cd/dvd drive. I've had 6 sony superdrives in g5's at my job die, and before they went, they would start making all sorts of crazy noises. I'm somewhat suspicious of sony drives, as you might expect.

There is a guy on prosoundweb's forums (I think), and the diystompboxes forums, named 'PSW' who has been building a independent sustainer, which can be added to any guitar without modification, and sustains each string separately. This allows for fully sustaining chords and such. He had even gone as...

I'm usually a career DIY'er, but if I owned a guitar like that, I would shell out the cash and get it refretted professionaly. But, if you must, the guitar player repair guide has a pretty extensive section on refretting, if you are looking for reference. Also, if the mustang's neck is straight, I w...

ok, I totally take back my prior post. I walked into work today, and one of the 912t's screwed.

I'm about to find out how good the warranty is on these things.

Apparently, the LCD's used in apple's monitors are the same as what is in the Dells. If Dell doesn't end up floating your boat, I've had a bit of luck with Samsung 912T's. I have about 70 of them at my day job, and after 6 months, none seem to have any dead pixels, and the color is pretty decent.

While I have only played a scalloped neck guitar for an hour or so, it was an informative experience. It does force you to play with a light touch. The most interesting part for me was to be able to bend single notes in a chord. On this guitar (either a fender yngwie or richie blackmore model; can't...

So on the new intel mac mini's : 1. Memory available to Mac OS X may vary depending on graphics needs. Minimum graphics memory usage is 80MB, resulting in 432MB of system memory available. So there is no longer stand-alone video memory? I don't think so, which is lame. The new mini does have 2 memo...

This probably won't help much, but I love whatever the hell is on the snare sound in The Cure's 'A Strange Day'. That, and some of those Martin Hannet drum sounds have been really moving me lately.

About a year ago I was tinkering with the idea of building a stereo guitar amp sim pedal (like a stereo version the ones at runoffgroove.com) to warm up my access virus, or building a stereo overdriving lowpass filter with a LM13700 chip, but like most things, I never got around to it.

there's a free plugin by destroy fx, called 'buffer override', which, after a bit of knob twirling, can do something kind of like that, but maybe not as drastic sounding. I've put drums through it, and gotten some interesting results.
