Me too. Doesn't work on my voice for the same reason. However, it's commonly mentioned as an antidote for that very thing. Oh well. It is pretty rad at other things. I always forget what the default settings are on it. Low end flat with hi boost on? Or just flat all around? With or without the foam?...

I had a version 1 for awhile. It sounded alright. The eq's are very good. Indeed the headroom isn't that great though. I imagine you could get it sounding pretty rad with real careful attention to gain staging.

A machine that has been in consistent use for 20 years is generally quite preferable to one that has been sitting in storage for 20 years. The heads are the determining factor though. You can find heads for Otari 2 tracks. Might take some waiting, but they pop up. Not sure about MCI though. Is it Ch...

I remember years ago, when somebody posted on here that there was a 388 down at one of the Goodwill's in Portland for $150 or something. Happened to be when I was out of town, so I called my friend and told him to get his ass down there and buy it for me, or at least for himself. He didn't bother. T...

If you sold 'em at 10 bucks a reel, that's $1200. Seems like a no brainer to me. And it's more than worth it to get the flanges for folks who'll be buying pancakes. Just start with craigslist. I bet you'll have someone who'll buy 20, another who'll buy 30 etc. If it's not worth that sort of hassle t...

I use my tascam 244 all the time. Beware they almost always need a new pinch roller and belts at this point. It's the shit. It sounds like what you're describing. The 246 has slightly more features but the same sound. The 234 is a rackmount number (you'll need an external mixer) that is from a simil...

I fucking hate sampled drums. I fucking hate idiots who edit the shit out of reality. I mostly (98% of the time) hate click track tracked/overdub drums. Fucking rock like your life is at stake, in one moment. Quit building fucking leggo formations. The process matters not just because of the results...

I've always been surprised by how good a Beyer M160 is as a mono overhead. Right now I have a setup with an SM7 as a (very low, almost heart mic) overhead and a 421 on the kick. I'm summing these on one channel of a 4 track.

Interesting. You're re-biasing for the different formulations right? At one point, I spent a day doing as close to an a/b test as I could, between SM911 and ATR tape. That is, re-biasing for each tape, using the same source material and making sure every other part of the calibration was equal/flat ...

Yeah, Ditto that on going into the RCA line ins (or 'receive' jack on some models) I got that tip from somebody and did some tests and my 244 does sound better/clearer with more low end as well. As a listener, I get excited when I hear about an album being made on a 4 track. Just the lo fi distortio...

TASCAM 122 mkIII serviced and running great

Hey folks, I had this up on ebay, but decided to end it and try to sell it without getting reamed for the fees. It's a really great piece and deserves a good home. It's had all the plastic gears lubricated, the motors lubricated, the pinch roller replaced and very importantly, the capacitors on the ...

Jim, speaking of those output transistors, we're talking about Q12 and Q13 in this pic right? http://i26.tinypic.com/2vtwpvo.jpg (This is actually a pic of the master output I believe, but they're the same circuit as the input strip and this would be the spot before C37. In the input strip, these tr...

Here's a craigslist link for some pictures http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/msg/5134356974.html Avenson Small DI's These things work great. Very small profile JFET phantom powered DI's. They're nice and clean. $50 each. GFS (guitar fetish) P90 in humbucker housing. This is the bridge I think (not ...
