Not this specific model, but I've come across a few bands using other multi-trackers for similar purposes. The nice thing about them as opposed to an iPod for trax is that if something is overbearing you can re-balance it, plus a drummer can easily build their own headphones mix. I would suggest you...

If you don't have a hat mic up, how are you supposed to do the dub mix? This was half-joking, but seriously, have none of you guys ever put an effect on the hat? I'm not saying make a Ballou-style tunnel for the hat mic, but sometimes it is really useful to have good separation between the snare an...

Also, I would have never expected to love it, but I used a Subkick at the band's request the other day and it was AMAZING. Sadly the day before I had put some perfectly good speakers out on the curb (where I found them in the first place) so as to not have to move them to my new apartment :( It's po...

A fun one can be putting all the horns except for bari on a ribbon, and then using a dynamic like a 421 just for bari. So if the song has that old-soul-style call-and-response type horn part where the bari plays the bottom note and then the rest of the horns come in with the rest of the chord (is th...

so steve means they're playing to track, right? they've just done it the hard way by making a robot that plays the track on live drums and guitar hero controller... well, tech is great but i won't be interested until somebody makes art with it. http://www.capturedbyrobots.com/ Arghhhhhhhhhhhh this ...

For compressors, I recommend picking up an older dbx 166 to start with. They're two channels and you can find them for $80-$120 all day long. They rarely suck, often do the job quite well, and most importantly you won't "outgrow" them. The 160s are great but more expensive, stay away from the 266. R...

The e902 is pretty cool too. Has anyone done a head to head with the e602? The folks at Sennheiser seem to think it's a few dollars better, anyway... Never heard the e602 but I was pretty disappointed with the 902 on kick. On bass cab though, it sounds great. How would ya'll say the e602 compares t...

Re: Ashly Audio SC-50 Compressor Questions...
I have the original manual for the unit courtesy of a PDF file found online, and was able to dial in their suggested settings for "instrument sustain": Ratio 5, Attack 20ms, Release .1, and input gain controlling the length of sustain (which I had all the way up). Sounds like he's already got the i...

Oh, and I forgot to mention the classic story. Decades ago in Rio, poor kids didn't have a lot of fuzz pedals around so someone associated with Os Mutantes made their fuzz pedal out of parts taken from a sewing machine. Pretty amazing. I think this might be a garbled version of the "Bat Macumba" st...

When I test this stuff (turn the gain down, turn the fader up) i hear virtually no overall change (again, within reasonable ranges) and notice no reduction in feedback. If you're not noticing any change in the amount of feedback, it could be because the wedge isn't properly EQ'd, or your gain struc...

WAIT A MINUTE. FACT. The nonsense about leaving the faders at zero and mixing with your preamp gains is indeed ridiculous in a live setting, but it is also a completely separate issue. Gain structure is important in the recording studio but in sound reinforcement it's the MOST important thing. Most...

What I'd recommend for your situation: -Buy a Tascam 234 and a 4-channel rackmount line mixer -get a small rack and put the pres you already own in the rack -Track from the preamps straight into the 234, monitor from the line mixer, and when you get home dump it straight off the machine into the com...
