Re: Good Mic for Male VocalsGood Mic for Male Vocals
From experience I had a pair of 219's to check out when they first came out and they were a bit dumpy in tone. I wasn't running them through a good mic pre and my EQ's were crap so I was listening to mostly the generated characteristic of the mic and I didn't like it for male vocals especially. Some...

Re: I guess film school is about to pay off
Wow, a lot more responses than I thought I'd get. To clarify a few things while answering some comments, I'm not going in to film work anytime soon again. It left a bad taste in my mouth and the hours and stress isn't worth it. I'm not looking to make any money off this either or I should say I don'...

Re: I guess film school is about to pay off
Cool Roman, great stories. I did work on sets and that was the worst. I didn't graduate from the film school I went to. I have 'authority' problems and butted heads with the teachers all the time. I mean why am I at an 'art school' where people are suppose to find their voice and the teacher and oth...

I guess film school is about to pay off
I went to school for film about 11 years ago and it migrated to recording bands. I actually wanted to do Foley or soundtrack composing but it was more convenient for me to record bands so I have ever since, full-time. I know 98% of this forum revolves around recording bands but I?m curious if there ...

Re: dbx project 1 266?
Gee, mediocre praise(?) for the 266 Project1 :( It?s all a matter of taste. Let me state, I LOVE THEM. I use them on all my mixes. The only thing I don?t use them for is Bass guitar. I don?t use the gates on them only because a) I don?t like gates and b) they?re temperamental, I prefer the Drawmer 2...

Re: sound of the AKG 414
This might be knee jerk response but tell her you can't afford one and if that's what she wants she'll have to buy one herself. I remember an old interview with Albini where they were talking about the Plant & Page album he did. Albini said Robert brought some of his own gear with him that he likes ...

Re: Should i sell my four track
Lend it to your friend, permanent loan sorta thing. I have a 1" 16 track that I haven't touched in almost 5 years. I hung on to it for sentimental value and if I was doing a remote recording, it sounds ok and is easier to haul than my 2" 24 track, heh. I've been debating selling the 16 track since I...

Presonus ACP-8 Problems--be aware
If there's anyone considering the purchase of the Presonus ACP-8 over the ACP-88 eight channel compressor, please read my horrors... I bought an ACP-88 for a session and loved it. Because I bought the unit for one session only and returned it (money was tight to keep it) when I had money again I wan...

Re: Recall Sheets
Wow, that's pretty sweet. It took me a whole day, if not two, scanning manuals, throwing them in Photoshop, cut/paste, arrange, and print the Recall sheets I have. This will make things much easier. I can't believe they're working on a D&R section too...life is good

Re: song arrangement vs gear, format
I can make the same analogy within a one-session context... Why do I not keep a bad take if all the parts were played technically perfect? It didn't have energy. If the bands not in to it or are sheepish about something it comes through the recording, no matter how good the recording is. When I was ...

Re: Side-Chaining options, advice please
Thanks for the speedy replies and great suggestions. So as I looked around at different things both on the net and at stores I bought a couple more Aphex 109's. Like I said I've owned one before and found no purpose for it except for the occasional subtractive filtering, certainly not a great unit a...

Re: effectron/effectron II
So I was out gear shopping today and ran across what the original thread was referring to. It was a used Effecton 1024. Its paint job was a bit different in that it simply stated 'Effectron' with a treble clef next to it. It also didn't have the ADM before 1024. Other than that it had the same featu...

Side-Chaining options, advice please
I FINALLY discovered the joys of side-chaining an EQ thru a compressor. Um, so what if it took me 8 years to try it, get off my back already! Seriously tho, it does wonders for bringing out the girth out of drums during a mix. So here's my question: I need some more outboard EQ's. I want Parametric,...
