Re: Insert as direct out?
This was discussed in depth quite recently. The concensus was yes, if I remember correctly - the board should not freak out. Doesn't sound like a bad idea to me, as I've been meaning to try it myself. It would be nice to have a switch for turning them back into inserts, however. Maybe mount some SPS...

Re: DUMBEST QUESTION EVER
have the drummer play at normal volume and move the palm of your hand around the kick where you're thinking of placing the ribbon mic. You'll feel heavy puffs of air but you'll also find a spot where there's little air moving (where you can't feel it). This is a safe spot. I do the same thing for co...

Re: tape bias how to?
Like SoundGuy said, biasing as part of the calibration process has been discussed here too many times and you should search the older threads and "best of" stickies for this info. I'd like to add that sometimes you need a frequency counter capable of the +200MHz range when the bias frequency adjustm...

Re: Mic manuf. for tapeoppers
Based on the sucess of the Hamptone kits around here, I agree that a large diaphragm condenser kit would work out just fine. All we'd need is an article in Tape Op to advertise + provide instructions.

Re: Mic manuf. for tapeoppers
I like your idea Joly, but do you really think we'd ever get enough buyers to meet manufacturing and setup chrages? Perhaps with an ad in TapeOp magazine, maybe... or if they only needed to use off the shelf parts minus a new PCB which we'd supply the design for - that would make it a lot more cost ...

Re: Mic manuf. for tapeoppers
Ordering stuff that they already make for several rebranding companies is one thing, a little bit of profit for them I'd imagine. But complete manufacturing from scratch!? I can only imagine how much it costs in setup charges alone. Sure, the labour is cheap, but think about all the molds, machining...

Re: API/ B+K = Que Lastima - Que Horrible - No Es Bueno
Oscillating opamps/transistors make a weeeeeee sound when presented with incorrect bias currents. I'm just guessing here but could be the case if phantom power from the 312 is too low due to any combination of 1) malfunctioning phantom regulator presents voltage too low, 2) insufficient phantom curr...

Re: ATR is making tape right now!
They can call it "Pro" and watch the sales grow. Seriously though, isn't that how most companies get the prosumers to buy their stuff? Let's face the facts... prosumers outnumber professionals. It's a good market to break into financially and I'm sure we all want this venture to stay afloat. I hope ...

Re: Ribbon Mic Mass Hysteria
Yes, it's the HRM-4. Made by a Chinese company (big surprise there!) of which I can't remember the name right now. Rebranded and sold by Nady, SE Electronics, PPA, and T-Bone (www.thomann.de). As many have already reported, it's the same mic. The practice is nothing new. There appear to be fewer tha...

Re: recording zine looking for helpers
Someone should make an audio DIY mag. Something like the Tremain's Audio Cyclopedia but in Magazine form. You could call it Op Amp or Tube Amp or something like that. It would cover everything from Guitar amps, to Compressors, to mods, and circuit theory. I was just thinking the same thing! Been sp...

UNSANE is still around? Awsome! When I was playing death metal it had to be 12 guage or else! If I'd known about heavier guages at the time I would've used them.

Re: what is this? has anyone tried it?
how big is that thing? Well, there's a 12AX7 sticking out the front for size reference. I like the fact that they advertise polystyrene capacitors. That's a smart move and a good sign, seeing as how polystyrenes are what you can replace cheap ceramic capacitors with in analog gear to make it sound ...

Re: what's the difference between amek and TAC?
I believe TAC, an acronym for Total Audio Concepts, was originally its own company and purchased by Amek (British) in the mid-late 80s. I could be totally wrong so you'd best do some google searching. I'm pretty sure Amek's website has some company history but I'm too lazy to check.

Re: Rock Drums in mix - sweep left to right?
Although I play drums and have a bias, I am happy to pan from either perspective. However, the fact of the matter is that since we mostly close mic rock drum kits from behind where the drummer is hitting them, it makes absolutely no sense to me to pan it audience perspective. Furthermore, if you're ...

Re: Does anyone else find it ironic?
I would give AC2 more credit than that, but you are not incorrect in saying so. I find that you really have to mess with the bias and response times to hear a dramatic effect. Ultimately it sounds like a highly colored and sloppy compression when pushed. It deson't sound like tape but I like what it...
