Re: will you walk me through a pan repair on my mackie

[Yoda voice]Doomed you are. A sure path to the Dark Side mackie repairs are! Behringer tech Annikin Skywalker become did.[/Yoda voice] Yup, monolithic circuit boards are a real PITA to work on. Every knob must be removed, and in some stuff (my little Spirit Racpac) you have the pleasure of removing ...

Re: The microphone on Conan O'brien's desk

Didn't Johnny Carson used to have something like a 414 on his desk? Anyway, I think that those mics nowadays are just props. It would be too inconsistent to switch between a lav and a vintage desk mic, plus they'd have to worry about the host moving around. Probably Conan's mic is hooked up for come...

New issue of TapeOp!

Little surprise in the mailbox, the new issue of TapeOp is out!

Can't wait to read the Bob Moog article.

Re: OHM, OHM, on the range

You might get a little more volume, although maybe a bit dirtier.

Tube amps are reasonable tolerant of small impedance differences, so 3.2 should be safe.

Re: "Everybody's Got a Hungry Heart"

I always figured he recorded that one after taking a few vocal lessons... it's more in the high range of what his voice really *should* sound like. But he's been singing low on everything else for years.

No kidding - I even had one trip when I used a voltmeter to measure hot-ground on a stage outlet.

Re: grounding a guitar amp

New York Dave's stuff is 100% right. And I'd strongly recommend having a tech do the work, if you're not much on soldering.

Pretty much any old ungrounded amp I work on gets a proper grounded cord... these days I'd probably have some liability problems if I didn't.

Arour does it, and I've heard ProTools sessions rendered at a low quality level for test mixes.

Re: Piece of gear to control Background Vocal level from sta

Could the backup singer just learn how to back away from the mic during those songs?

The other option I can think of would be one of those onstage vocal effects units - just program a couple patches with no effects and the appropriate volume levels.

Re: Humble Room Studio Pictures

Scodiddly, i have the same mixer and (probably more bizarrely) shoe rack used in a similar non-conventional manner. The Spirit Folio RacPac? It's a pretty nice little mixer, aside from the #@$%@#$% lack of channel mutes. But I just got a DDA 16x4, which is about 4x the size. The shoe rack is from I...

Re: Humble Room Studio Pictures

http://www.scotthelmke.com/office-1.jpg It's going to be torn up pretty soon; I just got a new mixer. The room itself is pretty good; it's got a high, angled ceiling and a lot of rough wood for the wall surfaces. It's also rather narrow; there's a floor cabinet I can reach back and touch while sitt...

Re: Robert Johnson

Back in those days they pretty much had to record in a hotel room or something... The producer(s) would wander around the region looking for musicians, hire them for a couple recording sessions, etc. No money for travelling anywhere, and good luck getting a black musician into a real studio. So with...

Re: What Did You Work On Today? 5-17-04

My "new" console came in, a DDA Interface 16x4. I spent the afternoon testing it out, then removing a couple of annoying mods from the previous owner. Looks pretty new, actually. And it must have a 300 watt power amp hidden in there somewhere to feed the headphones...
