I have two 451's(from the late 70's) and both have started to exhibit the crackling you describe. I'm just gonna send mine out(not to AKG) and have them fixed...just need to get around to it

Years ago I had a 414B/ULS that needed a switch replaced and it had to go back to Nashville. I took it to the local shop and they couldn't get at it since it was all covered in epoxy goop.
