Easy, AKG 414B-ULS or the TL model. All the patterns, low cuts and pads. Elegant European sound with a flat response, takes EQ great.

None of those lube solutions are conductive, just the opposite. Nearly all screw on capsules require a good electrical contact to the threads/casing. Insulating those threads with lubes may lead to other probles and noise. I use Stabilent 22A here as a conductive lube. It's a polymer that is conduct...

[quote="Jim Williams" I never had great results using a dipole mic for overheads, I don't want to mic the ceiling. It's an interesting point - in theory I would have agreed but I've found that in my experience, the coles actually gives me a very tight, dry and focused sound - much less room tone th...

I've had great results over the years with a pair of transformerless 414's as overheads and an RE-20 for kick.

Those consoles can be a job to rework, all SIP opamps requiring adaptors. If you want to hear what a modified M-600 sounds like, check out the Yes CD called "Open Your Eyes" produced by Billy Sherwood back in the mid 1990's. It's all M-600 including mixing. Yes went to the Enterprise SSL studio to m...

I've never seen a bipolar el cap used for psu decoupling, they are polarized with a black stripe showing polarity. Knowing what you are doing is first before anything else.

Don't let the smoke out.

Bipolar EL caps will not have the black stripe down one side with a - sign on it. Otherwise, the markings for them can be anything. Best to use a DVM and check the DC offsets facing each cap first, most manufacturers don't do that so many cases the cap is wired in the wrong way and doesn't get the p...

Considering I used to use 24 track 500 lb tape machines my location rig is very easy to transport and use now days. I can skip the high end mic pre racks and just use the modified soundcraft console, I can carry that in myself as it's pretty small and lightweight. Mic stands, a few DI's, great mics,...

My PC interfaced remote recording experiences have been bad. You really don't need problems when the band is ready to play. You don't get second chances. Reliability is key, a messed up laptop recording is useless. I use a Alesis HD24XR with a stack of preamps and a small 16x4x2x24 Soundcraft Delta ...

If the client cares about the results, they can move the mic for you as well.

Or you can move the mic while they listen and pick the spot they like.

I've used a similar technique for decades. It's called an assistant. They can take directions and move mics for you.

Driving a 600 ohm primary with that design may also up the THD and lower available output voltage. Replacing the output transistors with MJE 172 PNP or 182 NPN will allow for more current, less THD. The old 2SC1000 NPN transistors are also noisy, I replace those with 2SC3329 BL and that hiss goes do...
