polarity switching before or after

That is all excellent advice. I am going to try and get it right before I hit the tape, I agree that extra eq'ing and switching after the fact will only complicate things. Tape Op rocks!!

MXL 990 mods

Now just imagine if the capsule housing was modified to eliminate the diaphragm set-back "tunnel coloration" then mounted in a modifed low-diffraction saddle instead of that brass baffle ring that causes edge diffraction coloration, (with the redundent capsule diaphragm screen removed) then the ele...

mxl 990-not total crap

I pulled out the two inner screens of my MXL 990 and was very impressed with the resulting sound. A lot more "airy", well worth the 5 minutes with a pair of needlenose. I would suggest this step to anyone with a 990 before spending more money on a mic with similar results.

polarity-before or after recording?

Okay, I am obviously not a scientist or even a techie by any claim. My question is this: can someone explain to me in layman's terms if switching polarity on a track that is already recorded actually changes the polarity of the playback? I want to know if I can deal with phasing issues during mixdow...

secondary monitors

One thing I use in my studio is a pair of 6 1/2 " car speakers. They are about as crappy as you can get but they will give you an idea of how your mixes are translating to the "real world". They are unforgiving with overboosted bass and too much reverb, so they will give you an idea of where the tro...

search index for product reviews?

I am not sure if anyone has brought this up, but is there a search function for product reviews? Several times I have come across a used piece of gear for a good price and I think ..."I remember seeing this reviewed in Tape-Op, now which issue was that?..." and I end up going through all my old issu...

Cutting grills and rubber bands? I like it! Yes, Totally Tape-Op! It will be like Joe Cocker, not much to look at but man, what a great sound! At least you can't see it in the speakers.... Thanks for the advice. I will try it and post my results.

tascam patchbay: help an idiot, please!!

I have a Tascam PB 32B patchbay. I have acquired enough effects and stuff to finally realize the need to utilize this in my set-up. However, I am unable to find much information online regarding how to apply this. The most I could find is that it is "balanced" and "normalled". I kinda know in theory...

mods for mxl 990, art tube mp??

I saw some blurb online about mods that can be applied to a MXL 990 and to an ART Tube MP pre-amp that supposedly makes them sound like a high-quality vocal chain. However, my online searching has been fruitless. Does anyone here know of these mods and where I can find directions and schematics? Has...

mic'ing two drummers

I am about to undertake another project with a similar set-up, two drummers and multiple other instruments. I would suggest approaching the drums with a minimalist perspective as far as mic'ing goes. Too many mics with that many drums is bound to frustrate you in the mixing process. One approach wou...

I would throw out the Alesis and m-audio. they're total junk. I'd even throw out all of them and get a set of these. http://axiomaudio.com/m2.html These seem spec'd for listening to a finished product in a living room rather than doing serious mixing on them in a studio setting. Have you used these...

What monitors should I buy?

Hey Y'all! I am getting ready to purchase a new set of powered monitors for my home studio and I was wondering if any of you have experience with any of the options I am considering. The first option is the M-Audio B5x-a deluxe. The next option is the Yamaha HS50M. The final choice is the Alesis M1 ...

Oops, when I said tape I meant ADAT tape, which doesn't really offer that great analog compression I would love to have. The DOD is the cleanest compressor I have in my rack right now, though I was considering renting a Supre for the session. Either way, I have a hunch that some compression is going...

Getting ready to record vocals, what would you do?

Hey y'all! I am getting ready to record some vocal tracks and would like some suggestions about my signal chain. I am going to use a Sterling Technologies ST-51 LDC, an ART Dual MP tube pre-amp, and a DOD 866 II compressor. Do Should I send the mic to the pre-amp, then the compressor, or do I hit th...
