lemme guess it's 456?

Yeah you really only get a couple passes after baking a tape. It goes back into self destruct mode pretty fast.

The first studio I "worked in" (volunteered / interned at) had a MCI JH16 16 track that I actually recorded some of my friends bands on in the mid - late 90's. Then I got a Roland VS840 that I used for a couple of years before I started buying DTRS machines 8 tracks at a time once they dropped to ab...

Whatever you do make sure you work with a mixing engineer that has the same goals you have. I worked with a band last year and co-engineered / produced this record with one of my buddies for a South Bay LA hardcore band. They wanted to work with me because I record all analog. A few weeks before we ...

I really like having multiple sets of speakers, I have a pair of ADAM P11's that I do 99% of my recording and mixing on and absolutely LOVE! A pair of cheep Tannoy passives and a mono Auritone. When it sounds good in all three speakers and in mono and stereo, sounds good loud and soft, and when I le...

I always use a good amount of EQ on my stereo bus. I use very little EQ on the channel strips other then HPF, usually just one or two channels that need EQ to sit right in the mix. I primarily adjust tone by mic selection, placement, loading, etc. and record it to tape the way I want it to sound. Th...

I'm curious how many of you guys have a policy in place regarding substances If it's illegal you don't do it on the property. Plain and simple, and no one has ever complained. If they really need to get high to record a song they can go down the street to their car. I also tell people I will kick t...

I limit my sessions to 8 hours, unless we take a real dinner break in the middle and leave the studio for at least an hour. I have a small cramped place with no windows, but has good lighting and a nice cozy feel. People usually feel really comfortable in there, and there are no clocks so you really...

Re: GLS Audio ES-57.....sm 57 clone?...but better?

they are supposed to sound better then the shure. Saying a mic sounds better then an SM57 is like saying XYZ brand of monitors sound better then NS-10s. Isn't the whole idea of these classic widely used mics is the fact that every engineer knows how to work with them. Pretty much any engineer knows...

One thing you can always do is build some short polarity reverse cables, I keep a couple l of them in my work box, they come in handy with a lot of smaller consoles, even the Midas Venice doesn't have polarity switches.

I have the input of both my 24 tracks coming off the same patch points, and haven't had any problems. I have always ran either one or the other and whichever one wasn't in use was switched off. Both machines have pro +4 balanced inputs so level wise things come up in the right place. I guess I could...
