I did consider a small booth for a couple of reasons...Such as providing some isolation for a loud guitar ( I hadn't really considered the Bass guitar ). I had also thought about making it really dead. I figured that I might could get a flat vocal and add ambiance. I was concerned about the small si...

I had originally contemplated dividing up my space into tracking rooms and a control room. I had so many people urge me to keep a big, open room and tell me that a booth would do more harm than good. While I was building this building I was using the garage for rehearsals. I had a similar setup with...

A few GOBO questions
A little background...My room is about 24'x35' 9'walls peak to a center, maybe 14'-15'. I like to record loud rock bands. Stuff sounds pretty good, but there is a lot of "air" on drums and vocal overdubs. I'm wanting to build a few GOBOs and I've looked around and studied what other guys are doing. ...

impedance mismatch? RCA to XLR
I want to connect a -10db RCA output to an XLR mic input with a 2.2k Ohm impedance. The mic input can handle -58dBu to -2dBu with 16dB of headroom.
Can I do this?

For video communication i would setup something similar to what you would get with Skype on laptops. For example, I would have it where you would look to the monitor screen to talk and the camera would be facing you. I can't imagine that any camera would have a microphone that would work well for th...

I'm listening to a band rehearsal I recorded a year or two ago and playing with the mix a bit. We set up with the vocalist looking at the drummer, so the vocal mic is AWAY from the drums. It really helped, but a live show doesn't really have that option. I really like the suggested idea of copying t...

I would like someone to give a few pointers on this also. I have a few old tape machines and it would be nice to sync to my DAW for transfers. I remember a little from years ago. We would record a signal tone to tape, then the sequencer stuff would follow the tape. I even did this a time or two to s...

I sing the praises of egg cartons, carpeted walls, and eggshell foam. Drapes are probably the same. Lots of people will tell you that all that stuff is nonsense, and I guess that they are probably right. But you have to work with what you have, right? I love all that stuff because it has done wonder...

I built a Tweak-O some time ago. I scaled the board size down a bit. It was my first project also. I didn't use it much before I pulled it back apart for some reason, but I really liked it. How did you do your finish? I'm not familiar with the small stencil letters. Did you have to make them? I have...

I had a friend with this amp. I'm not sure if it went out completely or just started acting up. His amp tech in Nashville suggested some of the upgrades mentioned. He went with a more common tube and we were all very pleased with the results. Sorry, I don't remember if they went with with 34s or 6L6s.

I've had a few rehearsal/studio spaces over the years and all of them have had some good points and bad points. My favorite was when I took 1/2 of the duplex I live in and used it as a studio, but it didn't sound so great. My least favorite was an unfinished 2nd floor of a gambrel roof barn. It coul...

P.S. btw, where's the lava lamp? I was in MSPaint, so the Lava Light was hard to draw! I haven't moved any to the studio, but I've got 5 or 6 ready to go! What about those gobos? I saw some that were 7' tall and maybe 1' from the floor, so basically 6' with 1' legs. I've got a big package of Roxul ...

I been in music stores that had the same 4'x8' closet sized rooms for lessons. The inside of the rooms were usually lined with eggshell mattress material. Wall cavities may or may not have been insulated and double rocked. They sound pretty dead inside and kill normal conversation to nothing more th...
