Also: For any pedal nerds out there, you HAVE to check out the Ibanez ToneLok FZ-7. It streets for $40 and just kicks ass. I honestly prefer it to a Fuzz Factory. Cannot disagree with this enough. Might be good for some, but to me it is one dimensional compared to the Fuzz Factory. Not even same ba...

I love FLAC. I use MediaMonkey (free version) to stream, burn, or rip audio in lots of formats, via MOTU, to stereo in living room or monitors in control room. I use a Cowon A3 and X5 for portable audio and video in almost any format. Cowon A3 has a great screen for video but also hooks up directly ...

Hi, our band is Doctor Nurse. What do you think?
The first one's basic tracks were done on a Tascam 388, PT for overdubs and plug-ins, and mixed otb on TAC Scorpion. I believe Pelicans basic tracks were recorded by a friend on an Otari 5050. Hope you like them. Plate Picks Up: http://fcots.com/nurse/Plate%20Picks%20Up/Mix%202_02.wav Pelicans: http...

Generally, I only really appreciate lo-fi recordings if they're borne out of necessity. My friends and I had been using a 4-track cassette machine for so long that for a long time if it didn't have that cassette sound then our recordings didn't sound good to us. We felt that real studios "made us s...

There is no ground available at the outlet currently. I don't expect to ground the outlet, but does using the CFGI protect me from getting shocked? Say while using a stereo output from a pedal into 2 different tube amps, plugged into 2 different outlets not properly grounded, maybe even on different...

you should replace the two pronged outlet with GFCI receptacles So are you saying I can install the GFCI with no ground attached and it will work properly? My house does not have grounded outlets and have been previously replaced, improperly in most cases, by regular 3 prong outlets without any gro...

Absolutely no difference in anything but loudness, though. So the same thing could have been accomplished by moving the fader up on the single mono track up 3db? I heard no difference. It was late. Nobody wanted to argue, I just stated I didn't understand the point of doing it and we moved on. The ...

You could also put in lower output pickups or P90-style single coils like Gibson's P94 or Duncan's Phat Cat. Never used 'em myself, but folks seem to like 'em. They'll definitely sound different than what you have now, though. +1 on this with caveat: I love the Phat Cats in my Standard Les Paul, bu...

Dumb Question of the Day
Please help me settle a "discussion" I had with a bandmate last night... Is there a difference between: a mono track being sent to a stereo bus, not panned or two separate mono tracks, but the same track, same level, being sent to stereo bus, each hard panned 100% to opposite sides. If it matters it...

If you go to Berkeley you should at least stop by Subway Guitars. Lots of weird off-brands from 60's to now, harmonys, kays, doubt you'll find a strat there though. Huge selection, tiny place, stuff stacked on top of each other and packed into every possible space. Worth a look-see just to see how c...

While you can make your own for very cheap, I am very lazy. I've bought 3 from these guys and they have fair prices on custom size boards: http://www.stompin-ground.com/ I then make my own case for the board with a briefcase or laptop bag and add foam to fit board if needed. For my biggest board I u...

they're like the indie rock version of Ornette Coleman. +1 on this. I love them and that drummer, for my money, is simply the most entertaining and musical cat in the indie scene. I have to say I am more into Deerhoof live vs the recordings, having yet to hear the new one. The albums never seem to ...

I got a great video from Dime a few weeks ago of Big Black playing in a warehouse in the Seattle area I believe maybe from '84. Two of the three are using this around the waist style strap. Also Albini pulls a cool noise "guitar solo" at one point, he must be using a floyd rose type bar, crazy dives...
