latency and monitoring?

Post by oxfist » Thu Sep 11, 2003 10:53 am

this is in regards to another post in general about playing with a click.

once i get the guitar down pat with a click, i will want to layer rhythms and other melodies on top of the guitar line, and i wonder how i should go about doing this considering the latency of my 'puter. do i time shift my stuff back a few miliseconds to adjust, or are there other ways.

my current set-up is thus:

dmp3 or vamp2 -> echo mia -> monitors

and, i will probably be moving to this soon:

dmp3 or vamp2 -> mixer -> mia -> mixer -> monitors

is this a bad idea or a good idea?
my computer is a DAW optimized P2 400 Mhz / 512 RAM for reference.

thanks in advance.

i don't think latency should be a problem. i used a p2 400 + echo layla as a daw for years and it was fine. i'm not sure about the mia, but the layla has 0 latency hardware monitoring. plus if everything you are recording is played by humans, a few miliseconds is not a big deal. and if you do hear a noticible lag, you can always time align.

It would take quite a large amount of latency to be perceptible. I wouldn't sweat it unless you're trying to make machine rock. If it does become an issue I imagine the manuals for your software and soundcard have information on it.

It's the cover for the new Wolf Eyes LP called, you guessed it, "Stabbed In The Face." It was produced by Andrew WK (Yes, that Andrew WK. He used to be a noise artist before he went all hedonist/nihilist-power-pop.)

The first link was to the homepage for my music. I just found out today that the site is gone because the guy who runs "I'll Fucking Host It!" deleted all of the free accounts due to some freakin idiots uploading illegal stuff. Ahh well. You get what you pay for, eh? Sometime later this month or next month I'll probably get around to buying my own domain and setting up shop somewhere else.

later,
