Hello,
I inherited a Blackface ADAT from a friend. The tape mechanism is shot, but I would like to use the A/D converters for 8 channels of IO to a DAW. Anybody doing this already like to share some thoughts on how this is working out? Also, what kind of card on a PC system are you using?
Thanks,
Roy

Re: ADAT frontend for DAW
Hi Roy,
I started DAW with a blackface and a Korg 1212 card on win 98. It will work fine as 8 inputs or outputs, at 16 bit. Still, you can't go in and out at the same time with an adat, so you need a way to monitor. I quickly got rid of the Korg, and bought a Rme 9652 and an Alesis AI3 to go with my Adat. That's fairly expensive, but Steinberg makes the VSL 20/20 card that has 2 analog 24 bit converters I/O, 2x8 adat lightpipe I/O connectors and Spdif I/O. They are around $200.00 US new, at places like Wife's Enemy (musician's friend) and other retailers. You can google them up. Very low latency (as low as 1ms, they say) with Asio 2 programs like Cubase and Nuendo. That would save buying converters for listenback, and you'd have 2x24 bit and 8x16, now. Over at WWW.Nuendo.com there are a couple of threads in the hardware section where people are talking pretty tall about the vsl 20/20. Here's the leg work: http://forum.nuendo.com/forum/Forum3/HTML/005375.html

Thanks for the responses so far. Anybody used the EMU 1212M? Looks like it might work for my purposes as well.

Hi Roy,
From what I've read, people using Asio 2 programs aren't too thrilled with the latency, but YMMV.
Good Luck,
mrc
