Need help choosing new A/D firewire

Post by rhizome » Wed Aug 18, 2004 6:52 pm

My original 828 died today and I've decided it's time to buy something better. I'm using DP 4.12 and I'm looking for something under 1500 that would have decent converters and sound really nice. I'll list my config and maybe that will help you all decide what's best.

dual G4, quicksivler
1.5 gig ram
rnp/rnc
mackie pro 1604
rode ntk, rode nt1, oktava ribbon, sm57, oktava 12, pro 25s, c3000.

Thanks for your suggestions! I want some clarity and I'm sheepish about buying another MOTU interface as the converters seem a bit ugly.

Well, I think some of the best converters w/firewire abilities is the Rosetta 800 w/firewire card. Although at $3200 may be too much. Try the MOTU Firewire HD, 896 is it? I know it will sound way better than the original 828 and is a third of what the Apogee costs.

Later,

the converters on the 828 mk2 are supposed to be better than the mk I. I never heard the mk1, but if the converters in the m2 are your weakest link, you've got much much nicer gear than I do.

That said, for a little more dough, a lot of people swear by Metric Halo.

Best,

The new RME Fireface 800 looks very, very promising....

Metric Halo has two excellent boxes for this. The 2882 is an 8-channel firewire interface. The ULN2 is a 2-channel Firewire interface with really excellent mic pres. I have them both, with a Mac running DP.

Has anyone had the opportunity to use Presonus' Firepod yet?

I have not so I can't comment about sound but it could be a viable option.

I'm between the RME 800 and the Motu 896hd. I'm told the RME is going to be really amazing. But I'm torn and will decide in the next couple of weeks. Some people have turned me onto this guy that does audio upgrades (audioupgrades.com) and he's not worked with the 896 yet, so he couldn't tell me if he could upgrade the parts yet. He's really nice and his upgrades are rumored to be excellent.

Thanks for your imput.

My older 896 doesn't exactly have spectacular converters, I know they improved the HD acroos the board though. I love mine but as I get better and better stuff it's starting to feel like the 'weak link', you know?

What about a FW interface that only does 4 or 5 tracks at once? I had the 896, but it caused problems (DP4 + iBook G4 = bad)
