Well, Sonar or Cubase?
What is your opinion? I am using my computer to mix down drums I record at a bigger studio. I have a Pentium 4 with a 2 gig processor, and 80 gigs dedicated to audio.

Re: Well, Sonar or Cubase?
I vote SONAR. I absolutely love it. I've been using it as my only app. now since December and it hasn't had me looking back. I used Cubase VST, and have a pirated copy of another version (VST 5.0) someone gave me not too long ago, and I just don't like the layout and control very much. It just feels and operates a little too flakey for me.
I have a system very similar to yours; Pentium 4 2Ghz, 512 RAM, 160GB hard drive. I only use this computer for recording/audio and possibly video editing in the near future. I think SONAR 3 is rock solid. I am just using the studio edition, but once you download the update from the site to 3.1.1 you will be in for some serious action. The producer edition is the same exact format with better plug-ins and a couple more bells and whistles. Once you register, or if you are a registered Cakewalk user, you can upgrade from studio edition to producer for $99.
I have heard some mixed, yet decent reviews about Cubase SX.
I guess it all depends on what suits you best.
I will see if I can dig out that Cubase disc and give it a look at again on another pc.
best wishes

slowly panning across something kind of crappy...

I vote cubase. I use nuendo and it makes sonar look like a toy.
I am sure sonar will do the job just my opinion.

Re: Well, Sonar or Cubase?
I use sonar on a crappy 1.8 mhz E machine with like 128 of ram for mixing and other stuff. the quality rules and with 1-2 waves effects on every track (mixing) there is still no problems. i imagine if i had a real computer that it would rule with a daw. the only thing i notice i can't do right in Sonar is split a stereo track to 2 monos? so i gotta cool edit them. oh well.
Re: Well, Sonar or Cubase?
I'm always wondering about this. seems to be the general opinion of the 'pro' audio community. what exactly makes sonar look like a toy? I use sonar and I'd like to know what I'm missing.phill2796 wrote:I vote cubase. I use nuendo and it makes sonar look like a toy.

Re: Well, Sonar or Cubase?
oops, the question... I love sonar but if I were you (I cant believe I'm saying this) I'd get pro-tools. if you're going to pro studios to record drums and the like, they'll most likely have protools. I get the impression that you use analog recording and that's why you're "mixing down drums". if that's the case the fact that protools sucks wont bother you at all.
.....wait a sec. I just went to your site. what? here's your list:

Re: Well, Sonar or Cubase?
Yes, we have several of those on the PC we use for backup and transfer. This is my new PC that I wanted to start from scratch and get some outside opinions. ProTools for Windows??? Anyone have any experience with that?

PT for windows is fine. I use it at work.
I wouldn't bother if you already have a license for those other programs though. seems like a waste unless you're getting the question everyone else seems to be getting 'Do you have pro tools?' a lot. Isn't that why most commercial studios finally bought into it?

Re: Well, Sonar or Cubase?
In response to one of the first posts, you can't judge Cubase by the VST version. Cubase SX 2.0 is nothing like VST. It is extrememly powerful, customizable, and stable.

Understood. Just giving an outlook of the minimal experience I have had.b3groover wrote:In response to one of the first posts, you can't judge Cubase by the VST version. Cubase SX 2.0 is nothing like VST. It is extrememly powerful, customizable, and stable.

Re: Well, Sonar or Cubase?
any of those apps will export OMF files so dont worry about PT compatibility
I just switched to sonar3 from nuendo and I think its spectacular
I do sometimes think nuendo sounds better but not enough to justify 3x the price of sonar3
plus sonar lets me run wdm drivers and now I can use my motu 896 and 828 and my roland rpc-1 (asio only lets me use one or the other)
24 channels I/O with no hiccups
on a 1.7 gig athlon with 512 mbs ram
nuendo cant touch that
