teac 5 board into echo indigo i/o buzzing

Post by petepeeney » Fri Dec 24, 2004 1:59 am

hi,

super newbie, any info/thoughts would be great.

i've got a used teac 5 board plugged into an echo indigo i/o card on a dell inspiron 8200 laptop (winxp). there is a -60 db level of noise/static that is always present with the board powered on and the trim/faders on or off.

it would seem that this is the board, but when plugging the same connection from the board, into a minidisc or cassette recorder, the noise does not seem to be present.

anyoune have any ideas? please let me know if more info is needed.

many thanks in advance.

john

It could be lots of things really.

1. being tht the cassette and MD do not measure accuately and the noise is there.

2. you could be having a ground loop problem. are the console and the computer pluged in to the same outlet, does the buzz exist if you come out of an aux or other output as opposed to the main outs, try every output to interface with the sound card. If you find inconsistancies, have your board checked.

3. the teac 5 is not what I or many others would call a "professional" console.
not that I am diss'n, I own a Tascam m320. not tons better. -60db is down
in the hole a bit and you may have to deal with it.

4. If it is hiss, not buzz, buzz is bad, record loud and call it "flavor"
buzz sucks, I hope someone can be more helpful that I.

But it's probably the build of your Dell laptop. How old is it? Old dells will do this whenever the power supply is plugged in - if it goes away when you use battery power, this is the problem. I've heard that some of them will stop if you use a ground lift, but I've never seen one that did (I've owned/used about 10 - they used to be my day job's supplier)

If this is the issue, there is nothing you can do other than only use it with batteries.
