Monitoring with ProTools?

Post by spankenstein » Mon Dec 27, 2004 7:55 am

So I'm tossing around the idea of selling everythign I have so far and rebuilding around an 002R. Is there no hardware monitoring on these? In order to have usefule (e.g. zero latency) monitoring during tracking would I have to have a hardware mixer?

i've had no problems using pro tools software (bus to an aux track and send the aux track to the board) to make headphones mixes or just setting the output of the track i'm recording direct out to a channel on the board.

I don't have a board. I am usign a MOTU 828mkII now and use it's onboard mixer to create a mix that goes straight to a headphone amp. I'd like to avoid a board since I'd probably only use it for pres (occasionaly) and monitoring.

a small board just may be worth it for the added flexibility... i'm not sure if the digi002 offers direct monitoring of its inputs.

Latency at 128 sample buffer is 2.9 ms @44.1k, 2.7 ms @48k, low latency monitoring is less but any active plugs in the track being recorded are bypassed. Latency isn't an issue for me except if you are overdubbing on a big session at a low buffer level you may run out of cpu. Moral of the story, get the most wicked fast computer you can.
