Plug-In Advice

Post by disperse » Wed Jan 05, 2005 5:41 pm

I'm ready to invest in a plug ins package for my studio. (SONAR, VST or Direct X) I would like suggestions on demos I should download and try.

Packages I will look at are the Waves Renaissance Native Power Pack, and the Waves Gold Package. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be a demo for the UAD-1 plugins.

Most important is a flexible, professional sounding, compressor plugin. A usable de-esser is also important. I am interested in hearing a bass processor like MaxxBass. Good reverb, delay, chorus, and EQ are just icing on the cake.

Any suggestions on plugin demos I should download?

Thanks in advance,

Mark.

P.S. I am also looking for a Direct X or VST sound replacer plugin (i.e. for replacing a drum impulse with a sample).

izotope: http://www.izotope.com

fwiw, i think a lot of the waves bundles are overpriced for what they offer. the gold native and ren maxx bundles seem to be the best values. btw, the voxengo analogflux bundle is great and a steal at only $79.

good luck ;)

The UAD-1 is the single greatest plugin package purchase you can make today. Be prepared to eventually spend a little more than the bundle price, as you will likely acquire many of their non-bundle plugin offerings, as well. They're all very, very good. It doesn't get any better in the virtual effect arena. I think their prices are very fair, as well. For example, their new Precision Limiter is far superior to the Waves L2, but is only $149.

Then there's the side benefit of the CPU savings to be had. :)

true, the uad is very good... but you can't download a demo of the uad plugs unless you already own the card - i thought that was the point ;)

i'm not sure i'd say they're necessarily better/worse than native plugs - that's subjective. too bad there's not a firewire version of the uad-1 with more horsepower than the pci card...

Yeah, I'm waiting for the next generation of UAD's card before I jump in.
It seem like it's not as powerful as it needs to be.
And I don't like the idea of buying 3 or 4 UAD-1's like some people are doing.
Hopefully they have something new out soon.

As a Nuendo user, I'm banking on Nuendo 3.0's insert effect freeze feature to eliminate my need for more than one. As it is, I rarely max out the card.

that's a good idea. messed around with cubase sx3's fx freeze on inserts and it worked pretty well ;)

now if ua would just release a firewire version...
