PROTOOLS LE To HD

Post by rodsher » Thu Jan 13, 2005 6:32 pm

Hello,

I'm interested in making an easy transition from Protools LE 001 to an HD system. I'm looking for some advice...basically, what do I need to buy? which plug-ins should I get? where should I buy it? anything I should avoid? how much better is HD than LE...and what am I getting when I upgrade? how much am I going to spend? etc...any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't use midi and I only prize good eq, compressor, reverb, delay and tuning plugs.

thanks,

Rod

Howdy... If I am hearing you right that you do not use alot of plug ins, my next question would be how many simultaneous record tracks are you after, and then how many would you like to be able to playback....This will decide how many HD cards you will need to buy in addition to I/O interfaces and the HD core card.

Maybe this helps???

Let me know

thanks for replying!

I could easily get away with a very minimum amount of simultaneous record tracks...I do most of my tracking in outside studios and then bring it home for overdubs, vocals and mixing.

I'd like to be able to play back 48 tracks. I'm doing 32 now but assume I could stretch out a tiny bit.

the main reason to upgrade to an hd system is to be able to use more plugins and record at high sampling rates. If you don't need alot of plugins I wouldn't upgrade to an hd. Which LE system do you have? If you have a Digi 002 you can record up to 96k which is plenty. I would go with the 002 and get yourself a really good A/D/A and Word clock and you will have a pretty tight setup. You can playback 32 tracks and record 8-16 (with an ADAT optical interface) tracks at a time. Unless of course you've got tons of money then by all means get the HD system.

HD- $10,000 and up

002- $1,200

Figure in another couple grand for some good converters and word clock and it's still way cheaper than going with an HD system.

Get this for your plugins and you're rockin. UAD-1 Studio PAK

what other gear do you have right now? It dosnt seem like the track thing is an issue and you can always mix a few tracks down if you had too. what mics and preamps do you have ect?

well if you really wanna go HD and have the $ to do so then go for it. But if it was me, I would buy nice pres, mics, compressors and then I would make that the last step. But I guess it depends on what you are doing.

i hop eyou realise that going from PT le to hd IS NOT like going from cubase sl to sx.

PTle to PThd is like having a toy car, and buing a real car.

although both platforms are WAY overpriced in my opinion.

I think important things to consider:

Record at highest sample rate possible
Record at highest bit depth possible
Record wav files
Select the force compatibility option

That should make everything flow smoothly.

I only recently switched from SDII to wav, in fact only a couple of sessions so far. Mostly for future compatibility. I'm still not totally sold on it, but it sounds good to me so far. All my drum hits sit in SDII, when I bring them in, they convert. I was reading this and thought I would check it out.

I've been trying to follow most of the guidelines with the hope that other people do too. That way, when we swap files for whatever reason, we're on the same page.

I found this pdf here at tapeop, on a post about paperwork...
