word clocks

Post by otter » Sat Feb 12, 2005 4:30 pm

i'm using an iffy set of mic pre's (presonus digimax lt) and using the word clock off it for my protools. i'm not too happy with how the thing sounds overall.
i know a lot of it is the probably the mic pre quality but would my track sound quality improve drastically enough if i clocked off an independent word clock (e.g. an apoggee big ben)? are seperate word clock units worth the investment?

It will make a difference, but maybe not all that striking. Depends on what else is going on in your signal chain, room, etc. I got an Apogee Minime that has a good clock that I run with an 002R. It made sense to me because I could also get two additional channels of mic pres/converters to go into the 002R S/PDIF port. I've definitely noticed an improvement in overall imaging, separation, clarity--whatever you want to call it. But it's not night and day by any means.
