Free Noise Reduction software?

Post by TapeOpLarry » Sun Sep 21, 2003 10:48 am

Does anyone know where I could find a "trial" of any noise reduction software to try out? I've got a cassette-recorded project to salvage. I'm running PT6.1 on a G4 Mac on OSX. Are there any plug-ins that do this? I'm clueless!

hey larry,

here is a link to Sonic Foundry's Noise Reduction plugin. But you need a DirectX host to run it, and the full version costs $280, so it may be of no use to you. But it does work really really well, i've used it clean up many cassette recordings.

here is one that only costs $30, but you need to run it on windows. http://www.excla.com/index-E.htm

if all else fails, i'll run the file through the noise reduction plugin for ya, it's the least i could do..

What you need to find is Waves Restoration Bundle. It is hands down the best tool available. I imagine they might love to give "Larry Crane" editor of TapeOp a copy for free. I can remember them throwing around copies when I sold proaudio gear. Contact them, you will love the results.

Does the Sonic Foundry stuff work on Mac? What is Direct X and what do I need to know?

No it does not work on a mac.
Direct X is a Microsoft standard for fx.
Go to the Waves link above and look through their demo downloads section. You need to get the RTAS Mac version. THERE IS NO BETTER CHOICE!!!!

or just vist this link for the download 7mb

Well the plug in is available in most all formats. The RTAS version is just what Larry needs because it is compatable with the fools software and OSX. However the plugin does the same function any way you slice it. And just because I don't care for Tools doesn't mean I don't see the value in it. Heck my pal just finished his record on Sonar and because of his hardware it came out great! Each to his own

p.s. I understand I had that commin' ;)

what about bias soundsoap? and the whole Peak application.

I know bias doesn't GIVE much away, but you can get PEAK for as little as $50 in the LE version and they've got some pretty good sounding audio clean-up tools.

now i've only heard ABOUT they're soap or soundsoap effect but it might be something to look into. on the up side it's totally mac native and is happy on osx.

A great idea, but to have to learn a new program to do this simple task could be more trouble than it's worth. However, anyone not using Bias as a mastering function is missing out on one of the best Mac only programs.

Don't bother with the Sonic Foundry demo version-every few seconds it inserts a beep. As for where to find working demo software I couldn't really say. Try Waves as suggested before or Voxengo.com (though I am not certain of their quality). They do have a bunch of freeware that you can dl, but I don't think that have any noise reduction sw.

tell me the os, and i'll send a demo version of what i'm working on... not just noise reduction, but that is one of its functions. vst for win/os9/osX.

Larry--I know that Sonic Solutions recently licensed their NoNoise(TM) software as a plug for ProTools--you might check that out if you're a Tooler...NoNoise is great; used to be a $15,000 option on a Sonic System. I have an old (circa 1996) Sonic System with full-blown NoNoise if you find you need to farm that part of the project out.
