Steve Fisk and "appropriate reverb"

Post by junkyardtodd » Wed Nov 18, 2020 4:04 pm

I could have listened to Larry and Steve talk for 3 more hours, that was a really fun listen. Early in the podcast, Steve mentioned a project that had "appropriate reverb" I have a sense of what he meant, but as a weird old dude making rock operas in the spare bedroom, I could really use a two page article on the subject.
Thanks for everything!
Yes, I am one of THOSE people, up in the attic, trying to recreate the magical sounds of my youth (cheap trick, boston, pavement) on the family 8 track recorder.

Listen to records, and think, "Is that really the right reverb?" Steve has opinions. I have opinions. I'm sure you have opinions. Feel free to act on them with audio.

I'm curious to hear spare-bedroom rock-operas by weird old dudes. As a future weird old dude (who's likely to be doing the same, one day), I would like to know more about what my future self is in for. :D

One of my usual mastering guys is really attentive to it, maybe too much at times. Insists on everything being in the same space, and wants to add additional ambience to create it. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Sometimes things in pop are supposed to be in different spaces....together.....and tastes change. I still haven't recovered from the era in which reverb was illegal to all clients, you had to sneak it in.

I def do not want my mastering person changing or commenting on my reverb choices! Wow. I heard about a guy adding phase destructive stereo width to mixes a while back. Wow. Send it back for a remix or master it. WTF?
