The Meters
I was looking through the archives and back issues and I didn't see anything that has been on The Meters or Allen Toussant. They are one of the greatest and probably most unrecognized funk bands of the late sixties and early seventies. I hear there music sampled all the time by hip hop artists. I'm not sure if people don't know of them or don't talk of them but if you're into good old funky music you are missing out!!! New Orleans Funk Baby!!!!

I'm a big fan. We had Allen T on the Producer Panel at the first TapeOpCon in New Orleans. Very nice guy, kinda just reiterates the same platitudes though. In a way I'm a little wary of interviewing him because I don't think he'd say much of note. I could be wrong.
I get the feeling there's some heavy bitterness between Meters and Allen, like they were taken for a ride? There's been a few reunion gigs though and that's gotta be fun. I'm just not sure how we'd perform an interview, it's really down to great drumming and cool playing ain't it?

That's for sure. I saw them a few years ago in Berkeley and they were totally badass. Not the original lineup though, really only Art and Cyril Neville were there. They have played some reunion shows with the original lineup and Zigaboo Modeliste plays in the S.F. area sometimes. So is Allen just a vague sort of dude or what?

Yeah Totally..drumsound wrote:If you like 3 now 4 you should check out Astral Project. James Singleton plays with both groups. He's one of my favorite bassists around, put him with Johnny Vidacovich and its magic.blue_rose_case wrote:the meters rule..
as do my other fav NO groop, the jazz gem 3 now 4
I love how the drummer likes to play barefoot too..but my favorite one of the group is David Easley..the pedal steel player..he is a real maniac..

Wax Poetics
Wax Poetics magazine had a cover feature on the Meters a couple months back. You should check it out. I should mention that a lot of the people mentioned in the "I wish TapeOp would interview..." thread have also been featured in months previous.
