Post by LeedyGuy » Sat Feb 03, 2007 8:03 am

Who is this Magic Alex that has been referred to a few times in the Geoff Emerick interview in TapeOp 57?

Anyone? 12 speaker control rooms? wtf?

Magic Alex was basically a hanger-on to the Beatles, who according to most accounts I've seen, over-promised and under-delivered pretty much habitually.

He must have been fun to hang out with, though....

Ah! Thanks for that. Wow. That makes that part of the interview that much more informative and entertaining! Thanks again.

He was a close friend of theirs for a while in the late '60s. He is not as useless as legend has made him out to be. He had an electronics repair business before he met the Beatles. BUT he had very very ambitious ideas (usually based on other people's work) and told the Beatles he could do them. On almost all occasions, they didn't become reality.

Alexis Mardas is his real name - I hear stories that someone has written a book for him; he also sold quite a few things at auction a few years ago, and rumours he may be very ill.
Relax and float downstream...

I keep waiting for TapeOp to interview him, actually. Maybe for an April Fools' issue.

He's mentioned quite a bit in Mr. Emerick's book Here, There and Everywhere: My Life Recording the Music of the Beatles. Not really any great things to say about "Magic Alex." Anyhow, it's a great read and a great insight by the engineer that worked on so many great tunes.

It is 2007, and we still haven't figured out how to Google?

For Christ's sake, his Wikipedia article is the first listing!

Sorry about that. I was just thinking that I wasn't the only person wondering and we could have a little discussion about this guy.

What do you think this is, a messageboard?
