mechanical instruments article?

it was a few years back, say 2001/2, methinks. some guy was building mechanical percussive stuff with hammers and ping pong balls etc...and it seems like i recall that he'd actually built a mechanical version of Pong as well...
i've either lost the issue, or managed to flip past it three times in the last week. Help me out w/ his name, at least?
