Matt Mahaffey of Self (Needs to be interviewed)

Post by andrewfoshee » Wed May 28, 2008 5:44 pm

I am hoping some other Tape Op'ers will chime in here. If you haven't heard of him, Tennessee native Matt Mahaffey is a very talented multi-instrumentalist who has produced a number of albums under the band name 'Self'. He signed to Dreamworks awhile back, eventually got dropped, and now lives in LA producing records for various labels. Matt's albums 'Subliminal Plastic Motives', 'Breakfast With Girls', and 'Gizmodgery' (recorded mostly with Fisher Price toys) are a blend of guitar-rock, hip-hop, and beautifully layered 'Beach Boys' harmonies. I'm going to expand on this post later when I have more time, but I just wanted to see if anyone else was truly amazed by this one-man band and his incredible records.

Oh, and I really think it would be a great interview!

TOTALLY agree. I listen to his stuff all the time. My then-girilfriend, now-wife took me to see Self in Charlottesville during the Gizmodgery days. Fucking absolutely awesome.

"Gotta trunk fulla amps, mothafucka..."
One of the great lyrics of all time, IMO.

His music always reminded me of white-boy versions of Prince...

He also knows how to record the hell out of drums! Wish he could do a demo on that...

I went to school in Tennessee around the time that Self got signed. Matt is one humble guy. An incredibly giving man...

old Self fan checking in. I figured he was still doing the touring musician gig. I know he was in Beck's band at one point.

I'm going to add a big bump for this myself... Self is what originally got me into this stuff when I was a teenager. I'd love to hear from Matt.
