Fixing it before the mix request

Post by monomedia » Wed Jan 21, 2009 10:26 pm

A couple issues back, Chris Stamey was writing about micing acoustic guitars and clarified that the advice applied to guitars only and (forgive me, I'm paraphrasing here) that explaining how to mic a singer who was playing acoustic guitar at the same time would require another article.

Any idea if that article is forthcoming? Being a part-time acoustic/singer/song noodler/home recordist myself I'd love to hear some tips on that subject.

Also, thanks for the the article on drum overheads in issue 66. Very useful info!

Cheers,
Jon

beyer M500 is magical in this application for the voice. It has so much rejection it's stupid. Fig-8 mics can work well if you play with their positioning a bit... perhaps have the guitarist stand rather than sit yes?

Thanks for the tips- good stuff! I've been dabbling with two Joly-modded mc012's with omni caps but the figure 8 suggestions might be more workable options for noise control.

I always start with 2 figure 8 mics for this application. One angled towards the guitar with the null pointed at the singer's mouth and the other angled towards the singer's mouth with the null pointed at the guitar. The isolation can be remarkable depending on how loud they sing and play.
