Liam Watson Toe Rag Studios- Paper Ceiling Tile treatment

Post by highway51 » Fri Mar 30, 2012 5:53 pm

Did anyone notice that the toe rag recording studio seems to be treated with retro paper acoustic ceiling tiles? I have some in the ceiling of my basement and they definitely deaden a room a bit but not drastically. They are still sold at hardware stores has anyone treated their walls with them and found them useful at all?

and look at this:

it looks more like those old perforated tiles like what was in Sun Studios.

I think we had them in my junior high band room too...

not quite the same, but i started poking around and found these. i'm sure they'd only be effective for higher frequencies, but they have the advantage of looking cool!

Yeah I remember them from Jr high band rehearsal rooms.
Look familiar?

I think the key words are 'wood fiber'
Lots of sources out there...not sure how the products compare to one another though.
Lots of new cement/wood fiber ones around now, I think these look pretty sweet.

I'm guessing they may be a little spendy though.

yeah, that silentsource wood fiber looks more like the stuff.

the mioculture stuff looks interesting, but essentially that looks to be high-fallutin fancy colored egg crates... would be interested to hear if anyone has actually tried using that for diffusion?

my suspicions are the same re: the mio wallpaper panels. the wood fiber panels are about the same price though, wonder what i could get out of them sound-wise. i'm working on treating a rehearsal/recording space currently... i guess i should probably stick to my mineral wool plan.

Acoustic tiles/pegboard seem to have been used in RCA-designed studios, such as RCA Studio B (Nashville), Abbey Road, and Motown/Hitsville.

Here's Bob Olhsson on "the purple site" talking about absorption and reflection in Motown. Interesting.

I recall reading that acoustic tile is mainly absorptive in the speech range (2-4kHz), which would make sense given its intended application in office buildings. I'm considering making a removable panel of acoustic tile for my movable OC 703 gobos, to see if it carries an appreciable benefit for recording drums and vocals.
