Or, skip the 610 and you'll still like it. if you're on tape, track 3 times with at least 2 people: one normal speed, one track high/PB slow, the 3rd track slow/PB faster. Be at least 5-6 ft away from the mic.campironwood wrote:You dont by chance have access to a Spectrasonics 610 Complimiter do you?
If so, dub as many claps as you like, pre mix to taste, then run them all out to a mono track thru this compresser.
you'll like it.
i'm doing it this weekend.

Re: Handclaps
I multi track them, left, right, and I distort the center.curtiswyant wrote:Any tips on getting good handclap sounds? I've tried overdubbing myself a zillion times, getting a group of friends, LDCs/SDCs/dynamics etc but to no avail. Any advice on compression/gate settings and stuff? Next time I might try doing them "dirty..."
Thats it.
probably already been said, but:
i have a group sit around a room with an omni in the middle.. make them roomy and even try a little reverb, compress them a bit too. they'll sit better in case somebody is has a loud, loose clap or something.
some people seated, some standing, some people slapping their legs, others clapping.
at least one of the guys needs to be clapping in double time with everyone else in single, more of taps then claps.

Sounds cool. How distorted do you distort the distorted claps in the (distorted) middle?!?joel hamilton wrote:I multi track them, left, right, and I distort the center.

Re: handclaps
insane how hard it is to get the simplest, most primative instrument to sound real.
being a solo recordist i have best results in a dead room or burried under a baffle. make multiple passes with different mics (small condensers work for me) and i mute the previous pass(es) so i can get as natural of a sound as possible and not match up exactly. the cupped, palm to palm, i've had best results with vs. the open/fingers to palm version.
i then track a take of hitting the whitepages with a drumstick. (you can search that thread on this site).
that's a place to start.

jason

That's the best tip I've got so far from this place!cgarges wrote:Next time you're by yourself, try overdubbing a few passes of slapping your bare leg with both hands. It'll get you to a group clap thing faster.
No theriously, I've never got my handclaps to sound the way I want them to. Two hands on the kneec(l)ap sounds exactly like I want it to. Hands down.
Where can I send you the $35?
Also, it depends on what kind of clapping you want. Intimate, small handclaps (like 2 people) are a lot different than the Wall Of Handclapping. That being said, the last time I had to make a wall of handclaps I made 4 passes of 5 guys clapping on an omni mic in a big room, threw a short mono delay on a couple of the tracks (10-20 ms.) and crushed the submix of everything with a limiter. Ka-pow.

Cool. Glad you like it. Jim Brock taught me that.
You may be getting me confused with Jeff, who I haven't seen around here lately. If you want, you can send $35 to Larry or Hillary. I'm sure it'll make up for some of the large amounts of money they've put into getting this board back up.eskimo wrote:Where can I send you the $35?

Well, at the risk of sounding ridiculous, I've also had success with having someone slap their bare gut.eskimo wrote:That's the best tip I've got so far from this place!cgarges wrote:Next time you're by yourself, try overdubbing a few passes of slapping your bare leg with both hands. How many of you out there have ever mic'd a belly?
I think I used a 414 on that one...
