Help With Mixer Choice for studio

Post by petreestow » Fri Apr 14, 2006 6:55 am

Hello, I'm just looking for some suggestions on choices of mixers. I am currently recording with Logic on the computer, and was wondering what would be a good 16/24 input/direct out mixer of choice. I'm looking to spend around $500. I want a warm analog sound, no mackies. Any help would be awesome! thanks

Yamaha RM800

I don't know necessarily how "warm" you'd call this board, but the YAMAHA RM800 is a VERY versatile and lesser-known great option. It comes in either 16 or 24 channel flavor. A 16 channel board goes for about $300 on ebay-- they're posted up there every so often-- be patient, because one or two WILL pop up. And this isn't my website, but it might provide some useful information on the board for you:

Hope that helps.

Look for an old Soundtracs board (maybe early to mid 80s?). If you are lucky, you may finf somehting about $500. I got mine for more, but it was worth it! Warmest board I've used and better pres then anything you'll buy uner 1K... and you get 16 to 14 of them!! I don't understand why poeple waste $$$ on preamps? :?

Ramsa!

You might consider Ramsa boards as well, I'm using a wr-s4424 and it sounds great. The pre's are pretty transparent, but on the sweeter, more forgiving side. Not harsh. Also not what I would call "fuzzy" type warm if that's what you need. The eq's are very usable, one sweepable band and nice fixed points for bass and "air" treble. It has a talkback section, and on the stereo control monitor output, there is a mono button which allows instant mono reference (very useful).
I used to use a 1604 vlz, but this was half the price, has 24 channels with direct outs on every one and it sounds much better to me, maybe I'm crazy.

I have also compared it with allen&heath GL3000 series (ramsa was not as accurate, but was somehow sweeter)

There is a board just like mine on ebay for under $500
