eh 12ay7/cad m179?
read this in a post from scodiddly:
"More recent mics like the CAD M-179 are similar but without batteries, and the tradeoff is that you definitely need the full 48v and 14ma to run the mic properly"
is this the reason i'm having to crank my 12ay7 to get a decent signal out of the m179?
would a seperate phantom power supply help?

I have never had trouble getting a hot signal off the m179 using the pres on an usb powered interface. I have used 2 at a time even and whether or not I got the best quality sound out of it, I still got plenty of volume. I have read the same things about this mic, but have never found it to be prohibitavely hungry and more specificically, always very strong on the output side. I would try to test it on some other pres that you know to be in perfect working order, in order to deduce whether your problem is in the mic or the supply.

i have tried this mike on my other pre (symetrix 528) and had no problems.
also tried my other mikes (condensers) with the eh 12aY7 and got a hotter signal at 1/4 the gain.
this mike does have a weird hum when i go to adjust the multi pattern dial.
before i even touch it with my finger about a !/4 inch away it starts humming.
if i ground myself it is not nearly as bad.
i took it apart to see if the the ground strap had come loose but it looked alright.
other than this the mike sounds good.
just wish i could use it with the ehx without having to crank it up.

Myself and a friend both have that mic and pre and we've both used them together with no problems at all like you describe. the noises your mic is making may not be a good sign, I'd start there. CAD is pretty good about service.
