Holy crap-tastic!!

The guys at Red have hit on a fantastic marketing concept to combine their genius with the most lauded cheap mic out there...is the Oktava MK012 becoming, dare I say it, a 'Classic'?

take it easy with the language or you're banned.

I wonder if it makes a difference if the body has the Scott Dorsey mods? Is the capsule ugrade worth it without?

Jeff, I don't understand why you're offended by this ad. They don't make any unreasonable claims at all. no "sounds better than vintage neumanns!" or "warm, huge, and crisp!" in fact, "designed to deliver a larger than life sound for your vocal and instrumental needs" is probably one of the milder boasts i've heard in an audio ad for a while.

are you mad that the 012 has a good reputation? if it becomes a "classic," it'll be in the sm57 sense, rather than the U47 sense: 012's decent and affordable, and lots of people are using them instead of drooling and hoping to own one someday.

in fact, i didn't know that this product existed, and my interest is piqued. you aren't stealth-marketing by reverse psychology, are you?

Maybe true, but the O12 will always sound better on an acoustic guitar than the U47.

Man, I wasn't being cynical. I truly think this is a great idea. Having 2 Dorsey-mod Oktavas myself, I look forward to trying these out.

Sincerely, this is a good idea.

I'll argue that as an absolute.

Well, as I understand it, they were designed in 1963. I'd say they've been classics for some time.

Man they rule on toms. I used 421's up until I read about them being dope for toms so I tried them out. My fave so far for acoustic and tom work. decent overheads as well

I'm also interested in hearing the LOMO capsules available for the MC012 at sound-room.com.

Anybody tried one?

Oktava should have done this themselves years ago. The neglect and mis-management of that brand is a sorry thing to see.

Intriqued by the large diaphragm / '012 body concept a few years ago I hacked together my own version:
http://www.oktavamod.com/gallery.html (3rd mic down the page). Just one of my personal mics, never offered commercially.
