Both mics are EXCeLLENT, in my opinion, with the PR40 being the one with more low end.gutsofgold wrote:Which would you say is better to mic a loud, distorted/over driven guitar cab with?
EVERYone should have both!
I compare the PR40 with the SM7, and RE20, though I like it better for an all around mic than the RE20. It almost sounds like a condensor!
Lots of folks use the less expensive PR20 for cabs too. It's more of an 'updated', better sounding SM57.

Generally speaking, the PR30 has been used more in this application (Tool, James Gang, Converge, Linkin Park, Queens of the Stone Age among others).gutsofgold wrote:Which would you say is better to mic a loud, distorted/over driven guitar cab with?
But it depends on the tone of the guitar amp and how you want it to sit in the mix. The 30 has "something" in the mids that seems to work well for guitar-- present but not too harsh. The 40 goes down lower, but also seems a little brighter to many ears.

Thought I'd pick up on an old thread....
Anyone notice that guitar tones from the PR30 feel a little thin and/or harsh. I've noticed lately that mine doesn't seem to stand alone very well. I've been liking my RE20 and my AT4033 better on guitar amps lately. Maybe just wrong match last couple times, but its been disappointing lately.
Anyone find this to be true?
