All analog remix record

Post by patternismovement » Fri Dec 01, 2006 6:52 am

HEy guys,

I thought long and hard about where to place this post. I think it fits best in the Recording Techniques side of the Forum b/c ultimately this record is all about technique.
My band, Pattern is Movement, recorded our full length record last year (2005) @ Tiny Telephone. Scott Solter engineered the record. That record is called Stowaway.
However, earlier this year, Scott got the 2 inch tape back and he went to work re-mixing or better yet - re-interpreting each song off the record. What was born was a new record entitled Canonic. Now - I tell you all of that to give you a little backstory to Canonic.

Canonic is a unique album in that Scott used only analog ingredients in the record. Specifically -- Scott did not use any computers in the making of Canonic. His approach would be to grab sections of each song which he liked and then to re-think them. Once completely re-thunk -- he would drop them to his mix deck. Once to his mix deck -- he would begin the process of piecing them together w/ razor and tape. I, luckily, got to witness this for 5 days. It was amazing to watch someone re-create songs out of your own songs. To think that your music has potential that you yourself do not see is an amazing event to be a part of.

With all this said -- you can here the Stowaway songs as well as the Canonic remixes on our myspace page:

or you can go to our label's website and hear a really nice version of Canonic:

Lastly -- Pitchfork just did a review on the album:

I hope you enjoy and please let me know your thoughts.

We got this at the radio station here at GW a few weeks ago, and I jumped at the chance to review it once I saw the description (Scott Solter rules).

I was not dissapointed, though I kinda wish I was in your spot, what with being able to watch him nuke all your songs :)

Very cool, it sounds interesting. Although, I'm glad not be doing razor edits on analog. I definitely don't miss that one bit!! I admire his bravery though.
