burlap on my panels/traps / spray on fire retardant?

Post by Jon Nolan » Sun Mar 25, 2007 6:17 am

hey guys,

is there some kind of product i can spray on or apply to the burlap covering on my panels and traps to make them fire resistant? i coulda sworn i heard people talking here about it. i've struck out at home depot, ace hardware, a local stove shop and a couple other places.

any help or ideas is/are appreciated. if i need to get some fire retardant fabric and change it all, then i will. i'll be bummed, but i'll do it. help!

i did a quick search to no avail. trying again....

hugs and sloppy kisses,
Jon

ok, a quick google search has resulted in a number of products with wildy varying prices. one is like $189 for a gallon, and another is $35 a gallon, and some say 'call for pricing' (see: probably expensive)

i guess i'd just like to know what you guys are using. i'd love to get the less expensive version of course, but the price difference makes me wary of it's effectiveness.

thoughts?

Hi Jon, I haven't bought any of this stuff, but I'd check your local fabric store. They are likely to have something.

You can make your own out of boric acid.

I know it says its for christmas trees, but it is the same recipe I've seen other places.

the above solution works really well...i suggest testing your solution on a sample tho. I'm not sure how much the raw ingredients cost but you really don't need a whole lot to get the job done on a large quantity of fabric.

the only thing to take into consideration is that it only works for natural fibres...and for them it works great. But if you decide to use anything with even a tiny bit of poly or whatever in it this won't do you any good. For burlap, it will work great andis non-toxic...as opposed to the chemical variety.

you'd better wash all your clothes in it as well, your closet and dresser are fire hazards.

walking around with all that flammable clothing on, it's only a matter of time.

Inspecta-Shield Fire Retardant - One Gallon Inspecta-Shield $189.00

Save the receipt and download any tech sheets and put ina folder, along with fire extinguisher service bills, tech sheets on any foam or 703 or Roxul. Then when the damn fire inspector shows up you just hand him this shit and yer hopefully done.

Making your own boric acid might be fine at home, but the inspector will want receipts and tech sheets for commercial spaces. Otherwise you'll have to tear everything down and do it again. And if the inspector hasn't shown up yet, they will the beginning of a month of sessions and give you two weeks.

Been there...
