let us know what you think about that 450. I've been contemplating getting a few since they're the only reasonably priced side address small diaphragm condensers I know about on the market...

AT 4051 x2 (overheads)
Beyer M160 x 2 (room/overs)
Beyer M160 (snare)
AKG D112 (bass drum)
Beyer 88 x4 (toms, under snare)

A very inexpensive locker that I'd feel confident recording any kit or drummer with in just about any room.

vsr600,

How do you feel about those Avenson Audio omnis?
I've read some good stuff and they're pretty cheap at $500 a pair.

I love them, I use them for overheads (usually mono) and room mics all the time. They're also great taped to boundaries (walls and floors) and on the kick batter (under the floor tom catching mostly kick and bottom snare).

That being said, I did use an M160 recently on brushed snare.

m160 can handle snare no problem. i've done it a bunch of times. it wouldn't be what i'd put up if i had Bashy McCaveman behind the kit, but if the drummer's playing reasonably it's fine.

as someone else wrote, i only know what i have, so:
D112 or SM7 on kick
AT4040 on snare shell
AKG C33E or Shure KSM141's overhead
earthworks TC30s for room
M160 front of kit
bullet mic somewhere around the snare/rack tom for fun
whatever's left on the toms

of course there are way sexier choices, but as i've no experience with them it'd be silly to post "gimme 9 U87s and a C12". i did hear a royer sf12 as an overhead at andy hong's place, and he was getting a really great sound from that....

in response to what i use is what i know.. here is a typical set up.

e602 or beta 52 inside kick

AT 4047 in front of kick, usually covered in "kick drum tent" (heavy moving blanket supported by two guitar stands)

beta 56 on top of snare

Stedman n90 under the snare

421's on toms

MC012's for OH's usually in XY

MC012 on HH and ride

TOMB ribbon in combo with older CAD e300 for a room M/S, using the tomb ribbon for the mid mic even though its figure 8, and using the CAD for the side source.

Or just using the ribbon or the CAD e300 or CAD m179 for a mono room.

and maybe a heart mic or some "on the floor mics" for fun, whatevert is lying around..

looking forward to receiving a stereo ribbon to use either for OH or stereo room.

i've tried and liked most of these at some point... the asterisks denote what I've been using lately at home:

RE20* on kick, dont use my D112 much anymore
SM81, Beyer M201, SM57 on snare top
EV635a* "Heart" (my omni-moddded mk319 sometimes for super-crappy ring)
C414, AT4050, SM 81 in "Glyn Johns" Overheads
ML52* as Mono OH
4050*, Royer 122, C414's as room (i usually do mono, but LOVE blumlein!)

i hardly ever do toms... i'd start with the 81s, then try the D112 on my 18" floor if it didnt work.

251's - toms
C12's - overs
Km56 under the snare.
md431 and KM84 top snare.
D112, FET47 and NS10 woof for kick.
Pair of U47's for the room.
Throw in a U67 for the kick beater.
Lets see... some 160's for ride and hat.
This reminds me of a friend who received a free drumkit from DW every year.
He would tell them he needed a Neil Peart size kit then he would make two kits out of all of it in the end.

actually I recently did a jazz session where they were going for an older "mono drums" sound.. and I put up a Peluso P12 as the mono overhead (in basically figure 8 ), a mk012 (with two pads, cardioid capsule) on the snare and a AT-4033 in front of the kick.. it sounded incredible.

beyer TGX 50 on kick
beyer 201 on snare and tom tops
421's on floor tom, 421's on bottom of snare and toms
something crazy dark on the hat and the ride to get just the ping and no hash
coles or 77's on OH if its a restrained drummer.
If its a basher than something with more handling like a a pair of 414's, 4032 (? the good cardiod fet AT I always get their models confused, they all look alike!), Gt 52/62 or Earthworks TC30k.
maybe a 88 also on the kick or d12. (D12 is sooooo much better than a D112)
I like Beyer....

I'll stick with mic's I've actually used...
Overheads: 2x 414B-ULS
Kick: d12
Snare: 57
Room: Blue Dragonfly (aggressive) or Shiny Box 46MXL (softer)

The other 5 mics would be Nady Starpowers in a modified Decca Tree alignment.
