Summing With Tascam 388

Post by zesbez » Sat Oct 06, 2007 1:09 pm

Interesting story... bought a 388 for $50 from a guy in the mountains. Wanted a cheap method to record to tape. Didn't like the sound of 7.5 so I sold it on eBay for $500. FedEx busted it up (cosmetic) and the guy filed a FedEx claim. FedEx "lost" it for two months and then one day, mysteriously, it shows back on my doorstep. FedEx cut me a check for damages and let me keep it.

So, here's the deal. I'm debating what to do with it. Would there be any use at all to summing some busses from a ProTools session to it and back into ProTools just to get some analog color? I mean, the mixer section has three-band sweepable EQ so it could come in handy. It has 8 channels so I was thinking stereo drum buss, stereo guitars, stereo keys, bass, and vocal.

You said you didn't like the sound of 7.5. Maybe you would like it as a color, rather than as an over-all? Sure couldn't hurt to try, and see how ya feel about it.

Sometimes I use my 388 as a giant mic pre into my little pro tools setup. Sounds ok with some things - usually a 57 on a guitar cab. Sure is big though....

you could sum into the 388 from pro tools, but it will be unbalanced. unless you use the xlr ins.

I tried this, but it didn't at much to the recordings. I also sold my Tascam 388. I think it's a great machine, you can make great recordings on it, but 1/4 is pretty much a cassette, and it isn't going to add a lot for summing.

I would have thought running the audio into some transformers would add something... maybe I'll try it for shins and giggles.

But my goal is to do more than "warming" the tracks. I'd use it to sum which would add a congenial effect I would think. Plus I can drive the pres hard if I want to add a little crunch to say, a drum buss for example, plus 3-band sweepable EQ on each channel... anybody want to give me a reason not to try it before I lug this beast up three flights of stairs?

At that distance with good cable, I don't think it matters... plus I'd have to convert to XLR anyway so... null point really.
