I don't know where to put this?!! Vinyl question

Post by rushofblood » Thu Dec 06, 2007 6:07 am

hahaha I never thought I'd say this, but STYX did one of the most incredible things I've seen in my life. Their 1980 album, Paradise Theatre has this crazy holographic diffraction grating thing on it. And it's just amazing and beautiful to look at (I love all things rainbow and prismatic, no homo)

And. Where can I get someone to do this for my record??

You know what does that really well?

A CD... ;)

Erika record pressing used to do picture discs, which I am assuming that is actually what that is. I dont know if they are around anymore. I never used anyone else for a picture disc.

That is really cool use of a picture disc, though.... instead of the usual bad picture...

The one we did was a die cut picture of a hand.

EDIT:

erika totally still exists:

Enjoy.

 haa

picture disc, really? I was thinking it could be laser etched, thousands of tiny lines real close together, since that's what causes a diffraction grating hologram in the first place? Maybe I'll send a letter to erika/pirate/whoever and ask them if they know

I have 2 picture discs, they dont have that holograpic effect.

I still want to know if that is your makeup??

I really don't see any makeup?? But I'm not against wearing it, and I'm a Marc Bolan fan, not a Styx fan.

Split Enz also put out an album "True Colours" (which contained their one big hit "I Got You" - if you don't remember check out the vid at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xv6oOxn1axw ) that had this effect - my older brother had this record and we would stare at the vinyl as much as we would play it -

a few details about it are at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Split_Enz -
When it was released on A&M it featured multi-coloured shapes cut into the vinyl by a laser. The process allowed the vinyl to throw out a strobe-like stream of colours under certain lighting conditions. True Colours was one of only three albums (the others being Paradise Theatre by Styx, also on A&M and the soundtrack to the Superman Movie) on which this effect was ever used.
Anyway - I believe Erika Records in California - http://www.erikarecords.com - can still make laser etched vinyl records. Probably not cheap to do though!

Best regards,
Steve Berson

I should have typed: " Erika records can do this whatever it is ."

I always thought that was just holographic tuff under the grooves... I also thought that computers ran on magic, and that the earth was flat. Maybe the earth WAS flat at some point.

Lazer etching. Neato.
