Guy: Well, I am the drummer.

I actually voted this morning, but hadn't commented yet.T-rex wrote:I don't think Chris and Drumsound have even chimed in yet.
Yeah, I'm a drummer first and foremost, so that's where I voted. I also play keyboards a bit and studied saxophone for five years, although that was between 1983 and 1988. I wouldn't put any of the other stuff on a resume, though. I don't think you should say that you play an instrument if you couldn't get through a gig or compose on it. I mean anybody can play the kazoo. I usually wind up making fun of people who say shit like, "I can play forty different instruments" unless they really are a serious badass. Kazoo doesn't count and bass drum and floor tom don't count as separate instruments. Cymbals don't count as a separate instrument unless you can give a valid reason for why you prefer upstroke or downstroke technique for playing cymbals in pairs. Musical saw counts, but only if you can get a sound out of it on the first try. Violin, viola, cello, and upright bass don't count if you can't play in tune. Mandolin doesn't count if you tune it like a guitar. Roland XP-30 doesn't count separately from DX-7, contrary to what Geddy Lee might have to say about it. Don't get me started on hand drums.

It's just guitar updside-down (inverted octaves) anyhoo.
I've tuned my mando like a guitar but I find I can do more useful things with it tuned in 5ths. You get far more range and the tones in the chords are more spread out. For instance:
tuned in fourths an open "G" chord is spelled G-B-D-G(8va)
tuned in 5ths you get G-D-B(10va?)-G(16va)
Big chord vs. little chord! I always associate tight/small inversions with the guitar and wide/open inversions with mandolin myself.
anyway...

That's pretty much what I meant. Owning those drums doesn't mean you can play them. It's well-documented around here that I wholeheartedly believe that one should have to apply for a license to purchase hand drums. That also includes instruments like sabar, tama, repenique, tambora, etc.percussion boy wrote:Explain yourself, sir... Now hippies playing hand drums . . . that's something to be concerned about.

drums, vocals, bass
obviously i play guitar and keyboard and percussion and whatnot when the mood strikes. but i know SO many good guitarists and keyboardists that i would never put myself out there as a guitarist, etc.

i was wandering around montreal last week and came across 3 dudes and a girl playing a variety of hand drums...they had the right idea but their execution was terrible. i could only stand it for a minute or so.percussion boy wrote:Now hippies playing hand drums...
