AKG Perception 420

Post by Studio2roll » Tue Dec 09, 2008 12:50 pm

Does anybody have experience with the AKG Perception 420? I'm thinking of grabbing a pair while you can get the $50 dollar rebate on them (before 12/31) to use as drum overheads/room mics and replace the Shure PG81's I had been using.
I know... all low end stuff, the PG81's work out real nice as overheads for me though. Listen to the first few tracks in the music player at http://www.atomicfury.com for samples of my recording with them - theres no EQ or compression added to the Drum OH's in the mix) But I'm looking to do a more smoother, more air-y sound, like I get with a pair of C414's, but C414's and even C214's ain't in the budget.

Thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks,
Andy

I auditioned the Perception line when AKG brought it here to me at the store.

They suck.

I told them so.

We don't carry them.

Try before you buy.

I appreciate the input, but would you mind being a little more specific. Are they muddy, not very sensitive, high noise, artifacts, anything like that? Would I be better off just sticking with the PG81's? Is there anything else in the price range you would recommend instead for a pair of OH's or room mics? I can't seem to find any reviews on them anywhere.
