I never really clip the converters during tracking. How hot I record depends on the instrument, but I stay below 0. I do, however, sometimes clip the converts during mixdown. I automate in-the-box and send everything out individually (through 2 firepods) into a Mackie 8-bus (boooo, hissss, yeah I know, Mackie sucks, whatever. they're really pretty decent mixers). Then I send the master back into the firepod and I find that hitting the converters hard enough to light the clip led without hearing distortion really fattens us the final product.
