The SM56 is the pistol grip version of the SM57. I'm 99% sure that they're electronically the same mic, with the exception of the high impedence switch on the 56.

I just listened to the track in question and would be willing to bet brushes are being used and the snare sounds fairly but not obscenely soggy.

No no no! I *agree*! My point is, having purchased, er, I mean - santa brought the NEW one this xmas, and, they are a sham compared to the old (totally kick ass) ones. totally NOT "brite."

If you can believe this, Doug Clifford and Stu Cook are sitting in with my band, Tortilla Flats, for a few songs later this month in Austin at the Continental Club. We're a Doug Sahm tribute band and they were the rhythm section on his record, Groover's Paradise.
I'll try to remember to ask about the song in question.
I'll also try to get his opinion on the current state of lite-brites.
