favorite metronome /click plug-in?

Post by vikingrecording » Wed Apr 22, 2009 1:05 pm

any one have any favorites? I used to use the TL Metro with the HD rig, but that's gone. looking for a VST or AU replacement.

I was looking for a free RTAS one, well I'd pay a little for it. The standand protools click track has an aweful interface, something with all the tempo, accent options, and time signature options will a slick menu would be great.

The TL Metro is now included as RTAS in ProTools 8 LE/M-powered. I like the Urei click sounds a lot, since it's what I'm used to. Urei click with no accent is generally what is always used on scoring sessions. One company even makes a "Click Kicker" that converts any click sound to a Urei click. I also don't mind PT's basic "Click" plug when set to MPC click. It's a basic plug but I don't think it's that bad as long as it's set to that.

Hint: you can set PT's click to play note subdivisions by dropping a new meter marker. In the dialog box that appears, set the click value to 8ths or 16ths or whatever. Seems obvious but it's often overlooked.

I never really "got" using sticks or cowbells for clicks- they are annoying to listen to and prone to headphone leakage/crosstalk, etc, but some people insist on them.

I guess that's not too helpful for you, though, since you're looking for VST/AU. But I had coffee and feel chatty now.

yeah, the TL Metro IS great, but seriously, there has to be a non RTAS click in the same league, right?

Under VST Fruity Loops makes an incredibly flexible and versatile metronome [add swing, anyone?] (and it's so much more, as well).

Free try-out (fully functional but no saving) at:

Yes, I'm a fan and I am not a beat-meister by nature. I find it an inspiring composition tool and Big Fun to boot!

The protools click plug sucks but the marimba #2 preset seems to be the most tolerable.

any virtual instrument or drum machine can be used as a metronome.

Even if you don't upgrade to PT 8, you can use a bunch of the new plugins in 7.4. Get them free on the digi site.

I'll either use TL Metro, or boom for a click.
Sometimes I'll do a couple of tracks in ticks mode and do region loops (which will automatically adjust to fit tempo changes) for a custom click track.

Reason. I've come to the realization every session should use this as it's core whether working on tape or Pro Tools.
