KLH Speakers: Interesting

Post by Autodidact » Mon Aug 24, 2009 10:30 pm

Hello,

I have some Big KLH Home Speakers. They are 42.5 inches tall and each have one tweeter, one midrange, and two 12 inch woofers...allegedly!

I opened them up once and found out that one of the 12 inch woofers is a dummy! It has the frame and cone and all that, but no magnet or moving-coil element! The dummy speaker moves when I play stuff through it since it shares the airspace with the real woofer.

They sound pretty good. Just wondering if anyone has ever noticed this on any speakers and what thoughts are on this. Maybe it helps as an absorber or something.

My Klipsch KG4s have a passive radiator 12" in the back and 2 10" woofers in front. These are a great classic that are still highly regarded. I imagine your KLHs are pretty cool speakers too.

I had some old KLH towersthat had a 15" woofer, 5" midrange and tweeter. Humongo port tubes. I never needed a sub for home theatre with those!
But I hooked up a mackie powered sub anyway.
BTW Mackie 824's have the passive radiator as well.

I have the same KLH speakers Calaverasgrandes. My dad who is an audiophile turned me on to them years ago. They are great 'bang for the buck' type speakers. I've replaced mine with some Cerwin Vegas and will probably end up selling my KLH's soon. Anyone interested?
