another resilient channel question

Post by knapus » Fri Oct 09, 2009 10:19 am

I've found very different answers regarding the installation of rc and was hoping someone with experience might be able to weigh in:

What size space should be left between the ceiling and the first track of rc? I've read anywhere from 3" to 12" recommended. And is this measurement from the studs/joists or from where the final layer of drywall will stick out to?

Same question for the floor.

What size space should be left at the end of the rc and the next wall? Again, I've found varying answers on messageboards and manufacturer's pdf's.

Just hoping someone had some real world experience...thanks a bunch.

I'm not sure what you're asking. The RC is installed to the ceiling joists, then the drywall is installed to the RC. There shouldn't be a gap between them.

Oh, I just re-read your post, it makes more sense. This might help:

It's for RSIC-1 clips, but it should hold true for regular RC as well....

sorry, perhaps it was poorly worded...and thanks for the answer, but I'm really wondering about the channel itself. I definitely get that I need a 1/4" gap or so where drywall meets the ceiling or another wall (later to be filled with backer rod/acoustic caulk), but it seems like the rc itself could and maybe should have a significantly larger distance between intersecting walls and ceilings. My thinking is that the drwywall will probably not a need a row of screws 1" from its edges. Am I way off?

The link above says the gap should be no more than 6".
