i prefer the 450's. the pad helps, and the HPF can be useful. the 37 is brighter and supercardiod. i feel like the 450's have better depth and usually do not eq.

A-T's on drum kit

Post by premiumdan » Tue Oct 13, 2009 5:40 am

Edited original post to add a poll (1st one!).
Also, changed versus to include entire drum kit, not just toms.
(Mr. Nick's post above was for a ATM450 preference on toms)

Cheers!

I don't mean to be a nuisance but I've heard some great tom sounds with 4033's. Just sayin....

+1. Been there, done that. FAT! Doesn't Charlie Watts have 4033's on his whole kit?

Back on topic, I like both the 450 and the 37... I tend to use the 450's for larger toms and the 37's for smaller rack toms quite often on the same kit. Not always, but a lot...

Wow, what a loaded question, in a delta tree with a ribbon or tube mic, the pro 37r's might kick ass, but I've never considered micing a kit with them by themselves. The mic pre you use makes a big difference as well. They can be sweet or strident.

A/T's on drums

Post by premiumdan » Fri Oct 23, 2009 5:40 am

Maybe I should add:

If you have a choice of only using ATM450's and Pro37's,
which mics would you put on what part(s) of a drumkit?

Sorry for the vagueness.

Cheers!

4033! I only record one drummer (myself) and he insists on these. About 3" above the head, at the edge of the head, pointed at the center of the head. I wish they were less hot so I could crank the preamp more though.

I have the same problem with my favorite tom mics (Oktava MK012) and the Audio Technica variable pad changed my life. Cranked preamps for days.

The Pro 37 is most definitely cardioid, NOT supercardioid.
